Birzon scores four goals for Will East

Last year Marissa Birzon missed half the season with an illness. She was anxious to get back on the pitch and it showed in her results.

Birzon scored all four goals for Williamsville East in a 4-1 win over Hamburg in an ECIC II girls soccer matchup.

“She’s our best player, and she proved it today,” Williamsville East coach Chris Durr said. “For her to come out and set the tone today for the team and lead us was great. It was exactly what we needed.”

Birzon led the team in scoring as an eighth-grader and was among the team leaders last year despite being sidelined.

In Thursday’s opener, she scored at 15 and 22 minutes to give her team a 2-0 lead and put Hamburg on its heels. She added two more in the second half to seal the win.

It was a key start for Williamsville East against a Hamburg team that went to the Section VI Class A finals last year.

Amherst, Wilson advance in tourney

It will be Amherst and Wilson in Saturday’s championship match of the seventh annual Amherst Boys Soccer Tournament.

The host Tigers advanced with a 2-1 win over West Seneca East. Junior Nathan Woldu scored both goals for Amherst.

Wilson edged City Honors, 4-3, in penalty kicks. Cesar Carlin, Cody Secor and Joshua Van Buren scored for the Lakemen with Secor and Zachary Sarratori picking up assists.

The championship will be noon Saturday at Amherst.
