Olean, Franklinville win titles

Senior forward Will Bathurst, the tournament MVP, scored 24 points and 6-foot-7 Sam Eckstrom had 18 to lead Olean over Silver Creek, 69-41, in the championship game of the Olean Tip-Off boys basketball tournament. The Huskies built a 37-19 halftime lead on their way to the second straight championship in the tournament.

Bathurst also had six rebounds and four assists for Olean.

The all-tournament team included: Brandon Charnisky (Bradford), Graham Soffell (Maple Grove), Kane Kettle (Silver Creek) and Nick Schmidt and Eckstrom of Olean.

Franklinville turned the tables on Portville in winning the Portville Tip-Off girls tournament, 39-30. Portville defeated the Panthers in the title game of the same tournament last year.

Ally Haskel, the tournament MVP, led Franklinville with 13 points and four rebounds in the title game. Emma Doty had 13 for Portville. Franklinville built a 35-17 lead after three quarters then coasted home.

Vanessa Phiffer of Franklinville and Maddie Vancurren and Doty of Portville also made the all-tournament team.

Lew-Port 8-0 in duals

Lewiston-Porter’s Ryan Kromer was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as he went 8-0 in matches as the Lancers were winning the Southtowns Duals at St. Francis. Wrestling at 160 pounds, Kromer won five matches by fall, one by decision and two by forfeit.

Lew-Port went 8-0 in its dual matches. Lake Shore finished 7-1, losing only to Lew-Port, 60-21. Host St. Francis was third (5-3). Lake Shore’s Antonio Perna went 7-1 at 126 pounds with three falls and two major decisions among his wins.

Williamsville East won the Depew Wildcat Duals with a 5-0 record. Danny Graham of West Seneca East at 145 pounds was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Iroquois wins own tourney

Iroquois opened a 34-14 halftime lead and went to a 66-38 triumph over Kenmore East in the championship game of the Iroquois Tournament. Phil Smith had 16 points and Coyote Sokolski 14 for the Chiefs.

Alden topped Orchard Park, 46-41, in the consolation game as Dylan Dussault led the winning Bulldogs with a total of 15 points.
