Amherst field hockey 13-0

The Amherst field hockey team ran its record to 13-0 with a 4-0 win over West Seneca West in an ECIC contest played on a muddy field at West Seneca East.

Four different players scored. Taylor Balser had a goal, giving her eight for the season, and handed out two assists. Senior goalkeeper Yanna Boggio had the shutout, her seventh in 13 starts.

“Yanna has tremendous fundamentals and confidence,” said coach Laurie LeGoff. “She’s one of the most sound goalkeepers in the area; she has the full complement of skills to execute in every situation.”

Butlak, Kennedy leg out wins at Eden

It was no surprise that a Lake Shore runner won the fifth annual Eden Raiders Cross Country Invitational, but it was a surprise that his name wasn’t TJ.

Junior Calvin Butlak of the Eagles placed first over the soft, hilly 3.1-mile course, winning in 16:09. His teammate TJ Hornberger was there but he, along with the East Aurora A team, were resting for next week’s ECIC’s at Alden. Hornberger holds the course record in 15:11.

Butlak and runner-up Matt McCann of Frontier battled it out over the first half-mile before Butlak began to pull away. Frontier had five of the top 11 runners, helping them score 34 points. Lake Shore was second at 112 and Dunkirk another two points behind.

The girls race was a battle between Hamburg and Frontier in both team scoring and individual. Hamburg took team honors with 57 points, edging runner-up Frontier with 59. Hannah Kennedy of Frontier won the race in 19:11, outkicking Erin Cuddihy of Hamburg by a mere second.
