When: noon today at Buffalo State Sports Arena.
Admission: $6 (for Class D-C-B tripleheader).
New York State Sportswriters Association Class D ranking: 1. III-New York Mills; 3. Sherman; 4. Batavia Notre Dame.
How they got here: Sherman beat Panama, 67-50, in the Section VI final; Batavia Notre Dame beat Houghton Academy, 67-34, for the overall Section V title.
Sherman starters: 5-9 sr. Andrew Graham, 6-1 sr. Ryan Robson, 5-11 sr. Devin Moorehead, 6-0 sr. Ryan Myers, 6-2 jr. Jake Card, 6-3 jr. Nathan Ottaway.
Court vision: The Wildcats are making their second straight appearance in the regionals, and for the second straight year they are outmatched on paper by a Section V team that arguably shouldn’t be in the D classification. Last year Sherman lost to charter school University Prep, which was moved up to B this year. Now it faces a private school from a city which is Class B-sized (that’s what class Batavia High is).
The Fighting Irish have won four playoff games, all against rural schools, by 35, 22, 25 and 33 points.
Who’s got next: The winner advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four at the Glens Falls Civic Center. It will play in the semifinals at 10 a.m. next Friday against the winner of today’s 11 a.m. regional playoff between Section XI (Suffolk County, L.I.) champion Shelter Island and Section IX (Dutchess County area) champion Coleman Catholic at SUNY New Paltz.
