Randolph in the regionals: 3-2. Lost to Lyons in 2003 (32-30); beat Elba in 2005 (42-7); lost to Bolivar-Richburg in 2007 (35-14); beat Dundee in 2009 (14-6); beat Avon last year (34-14). In the years that the Cardinals have won regionals, they have won state championships (2005, 2009, 2012).

How they got here: Randolph beat Maple Grove handily for the second time this season, 35-12, in Section VI final. Red Jacket avenged is only loss of the regular season (30-26 at home) by routing Clyde-Savannah, 44-14, in the Section V final.

Pre-snap read: Defending state champion Randolph has been the top-ranked Class D team all year and it has played like it, winning going away in all of its games. The Section VI final margin of 23 is its closest all season. Red Jacket emerged from an always-competitive Section V Class D that had several teams ranked in the state poll throughout the season. Red Jacket head coach Marc Vittacore’s father, Dom, coached from 1974 to 2000 with a record of 161-78-1 and is now an assistant. Kory Fogarty, a 5-foot-7, 175-pound junior, has run 211 times for 1,896 yards and 23 touchdowns; quarterback Lee Perry, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior, is 36-74 for 706 yards, eight touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

What’s next: The winner will return to Sahlen’s next Friday at 5 p.m. for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals and a chance to advance to the championships at noon Nov. 29 at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome. The opponent will come from tonight’s 7 p.m. Central Regional between Section III (Syracuse area) champion Herkimer (9-1, No. 6 in state poll) and Section IV (Binghamton area) champion Tioga (10-0, No. 2) at Union-Endicot’s Ty Cobb Stadium.
