New York State Sportswriters Association Class C rankings: 1. Hoosic Valley (last week: 4); 2. Middle Early College (8); 3. Waterville (9); 4. Friends (12).
How they got here: MEC beat Randolph, 50-47, in the Section VI final, and then-state No. 1 Clyde-Savannah of Section V, (Rochester area), 62-54, in the Far West Regionals. Friends did not have to win a Section VIII playoff since it is that section’s only Class C team; it then beat Section XI (Suffolk County) champion Stony Brook, 55-48, before rolling to a 71-49 win over Section I (Westchester County area) champion Haldane.
Where’s Friends Academy? The private school founded by the Quakers in 1876 is on the North Shore of Long Island.
Middle Early College starters and key reserves: 6-4 Sr. Bri’an Brown, 5-10 Sr. Kevin Briggs, 5-6 So. Joseph Staton, 6-1 Sr. Tarron Scott, 6-7 Sr. Devon Singleton; 6-0 Sr. Brandon Jefferson, 6-2 Sr. Elijah Mingo, 6-0 Sr. Isaiah Dickinson.
Court vision: The Kats have played a very tough schedule and are champions of the Buffalo Public Schools’ Yale Cup (over larger schools McKinley and East High) thanks to unselfish offense, playmaking by Brown and Briggs and tenacious defense in both zone and man packages, which were all factors in the team’s win over then-No. 1 Clyde-Savannah. Friends displayed similar diversity with its pressure defense (14 steals) and outside range (five threes in first half) as 6-0 junior Tyrone Perkins (20 points) and 6-3 junior Cyrus Holder (17) led Friends against Haldane.
Bracketology: Also knocking off teams ranked ahead of them was Section III (Syracuse area) champion Waterville against then-No. 2 Elmira Notre Dame of Section IV (Binghamton area).
Coming Saturday: Coverage of MEC’s semifinal and capsule for Jamestown in Class AA.
