Timing was everything for the Mount St. Mary girls lacrosse team in the

Monsignor Martin Association championship. After two overtime losses to Nardin during

the regular season, the Mount used Friday's matchup to win, 15-11, and clinch its sixth

straight playoff title.

"We just progressively got better during the year," said third-year Mount coach Marissa

Dauria. "Our girls worked hard and practiced every day. We played a little different defensive

scheme."

Mount junior Jenny Grimm had five goals to finish the season with 29. Junior Emily

Terranova added two with two assists. Junior Taylor Gerst scored three consecutive goals

during a stretch in the second half.

Nardin finished the regular season with a 10-0 record. In a post-game ceremony, junior Bri

Robbins of the Gators was named league MVP.

Baseball

A.J. Witkowski gave up three hits in four innings of relief, including a 1-2-3 seventh, as

Orchard Park hung on to beat Hamburg, 8-7, in a Section VI Class AA semifinal.

OP jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. On offense, Witkowski had a three-run home run

in the first. Dylan Baun followed with a bases-loaded, three-run double in the second.

Hamburg starter Mike Holland, who beat the Quakers in both ECIC I matchups, gave up just

two hits after the second inning.

Falconer pounded out 19 hits in a 22-3 upset of No. 1 seed Dunkirk in a Class

B quarterfinal.

Boys lacrosse

Amherst won its 10th game in 11 starts eliminating Grand Island, 12-4, in a

Section VI Class B quarterfinal. The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead before GI came back.

Brian Lawson had four goals giving him 38 this season and Clifton Jackson had three assists

and a goal.

The game pitted two programs with winning traditions. Amherst won Section VI titles from

2001-2006 while the Vikings made a run in the nineties (1991-1995).

Chris Feuerstein had four goals and Ryan Feuerstein added two with three assists as No. 1

Hamburg (15-2) beat Sweet Home, 10-3.

Kyle Henry had four goals and three assists while Dean Swanson, Moe Bissel and John Starr

added two goals each for Niagara-Wheatfield in a 14-10 win over West Seneca East

in Class B. Sophomore goalie Rob Eisenbart, just called up from JV, finished with 16 saves

after entering the game for N-W with 6 minutes left in the first half.

Justin Moscato had four goals, Austin Carlson added three and Jake Stone had 25 saves as

Akron advanced with a 13-7 win over Salamanca in Class C.

Softball

Kelly Leonard pitched a no-hitter, going three over the minimum, to lead Lancaster to

a 12-0 win over Sweet Home in a Section VI Class AA quarterfinal. Leonard fanned seven

and walked just one while improving her record to 11-4. Elise Porreca and Allie Opera each

drove in three runs with four hits.

A run on an errant throw in the second inning was all of the game's scoring as

Williamsville South edged Lew-Port, 1-0, in a Section VI Class A quarterfinal.

Melissa Mageria led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a

fielder's choice. Another walk put runners on the corners. While the Billies were attempted to

steal second, Lew-Port threw to third in attempt to pick off Mageria. But the throw went into

the outfield and the run scored.

South left the bases loaded in the fourth and had two on in the third. Haley Streubing had

two of her team's four hits and Kyle Plimpton pitched a three-hitter with 14 Ks.

Erin Dixon scattered three hits as Amherst advanced with an 8-1 win over

Cheektowaga in a Class A.
