A classic season in high school basketball is wrapped up with a classic edition of The Buffalo News' annual All-Western New York issue.

There were four state champions (Nichols, OTC Middle College and Maple Grove for the boys, Clymer for the girls), two 2,000-point scorers (Nichols' Will Regan and Maple Grove's Chris Secky) and three Division I signees (Olean's Rachel Bantleman to the University at Buffalo, Amherst's Shaquita Smith to Xavier and Regan to Virginia).

The wraparound cover of the the 52nd All-Western New York basketball issue is a photo of our boys and girls first-teamers inside the Buffalo Central Terminal, a Buffalo architectual treasure.

The boys first team is headed by Regan and Secky -- who shared the Player of the Year honors -- along with three standout senior guards who directed their teams to championships: Darale Young of Class C state champion OTC Middle College, Mark Coppola of Section VI Class A champion Williamsville South and Carlos Rivera of Section VI AA champion Jamestown.

The girls team is all seniors, led by Player of the Year Bantleman and Smith. The team also includes two Niagara Frontier League standouts in Lockport's Lea Sobieraski and Kenmore East's Joelle Pollak as well as Mount Mercy's Katie Purcell.

The Central Terminal opened in 1929 and was built to accomodate 200 trains per day and 3,200 passengers per hour. It ceased operation in 1979 but its art deco style and historical significance has prompted ongoing restoration and fundraising efforts.

Recently it has become a site for events from from art exhibitions to festivals. For more information, go to buffalocentralterminal.org.

The All-WNY teams were chosen by The Buffalo News with an assist from Western New York high school coaches, college coaches, officials and voters on The News' weekly large and small school polls.

There are stats and details on each of the 20 members of the All-Western New York teams (first, second, third and fourth teams) and photos for the first three teams both in the paper and online; there is also a large group of honorable mention selections. (just click the links to the right).

The seven-page All-WNY package also has the final 2008-09 large and small school polls, every league's all-star team, and the leading scorers in Western New York history in both boys and girls hoops.

Online-only features include a season finale episode of PrepTalkTV that takes a behind-the-scenes look at the photo shoot as well as an audio slideshow of both the boys and girls All-WNY team.

You can find those features and a lot more information via the links to the right.

Also be sure to provide your feedback at the Prep Talk blog.

The cover illustration was put together by News photographer Mark Mulville and News assistant design editior Vince Chaiaramonte. The section was supervised by assistant sports editor Dennis Danheiser.
