Sarah Pawlak scored 10 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to rally visiting Sacred

Heart to a 43-42 victory over Holy Angels in a Monsignor Martin Association girls

basketball game Wednesday.

After trailing, 18-12, at intermission, Holy Angels went on a 22-6 run in the third quarter

to take a 34-24 lead into the final period. Sacred Heart went to a full-court man defense and

got some steals to spark its 19-8 fourth quarter.

Pawlak's three-pointer brought Holy Angels within one point (39-38) with about a minute

left in regulation.

The Sharks (3-1, 2-0) pressed with Tori Krantz getting fouled after making a steal. She

canned both free throws to give Sacred Heart the lead. Bridget Andrews then made a steal and

layup to make it, 42-39.

The Sharks' Katie Healy iced the victory by making one of two free throws with seven

seconds left and the lead held up despite Clarisa Matias' three-pointer with two seconds

remaining. Pawlak also had 10 rebounds and seven assists. Kristin Hall and Sarah Federico of

Holy Angels (3-3, 0-2) each had 13 points.

Mount rolls to 5-1 The Mount St. Mary girls basketball

team is off to a phenomenal start this year, improving to 5-1 with a 56-43 win over visiting

Immaculata. The triumph over last year's state Independent Schools semifinalist is

Mount's second eye-opening win in as many outings. The Thunder earned a 41-32 win over

Nardin on Monday, the first time it has beaten the Gators in 10 years.

Mount St. Mary went 5-18 last year but has six seniors and added three freshmen to the mix

for second-year coach Steve Gathers' squad — which uses multiple offensive and defensive

sets. The team played lots of ball during the summer time in an attempt to get the system

down, according to assistant coach Pat Kanalley.

"Last year we came on board and the girls were just working into the system," assistant

coach Pat Kanalley said. "We played a lot of summer ball ... lot of [girls] playing AAU. We've

been doing it the whole year and they're getting better."

Aaron Shabazz (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Jasmine Shabazz (10 points, 11 rebounds) each

had double-doubles for the Thunder, which led, 25-12, at halftime.

Elsewhere, the three-pointer is a beautiful shot in the eyes of Jamestown coach Ken

Ricker. The Red Raiders launched 62 of them, sinking 16, in an ECIC I win over visiting

Frontier, 76-56.

Jamestown trailed, 35-33, at halftime but forced 21 of the Falcons' 34 turnovers in the

second half and canned 10 treys, including seven in a row from late in the third into the

fourth quarter. Diedre Hunter had 17 points, including three treys, seven rebounds and five

steals in the win, while Ashley DePane had three three-pointers in a 12-point effort. DaShawna

Sparks had three treys and 12 points for Jamestown (1-1), while Kelsey Thomas had 17 rebounds

in the win.

"A lot of times that means not the greatest three-point shots, but ... we have a lot of

good shooters," Jamestown coach Ken Ricker said.

East handed Lackawanna its first loss of the season, 58-42, in a nonleaguer

as Tiauna Young led the way with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

Wilson beats Riverside After grabbing a feel-good win Monday

over CSAT, Wilson earned an attention-getting nonleague boys basketball win over

Riverside, 74-55.

The Lakemen closed the game with a 15-0 run over the final 5:26 during a 22-7 fourth

quarter. Wilson carried four-point leads against the Yale Cup contender into the third and

fourth quarters.

Ethan Baker (12 rebounds, five assists) had nine of his game-high 23 points in the final

quarter for Wilson (2-1), which opened the season Saturday with a 46-36 loss to defending

Section V Class A champion Batavia at the Cataract City Classic.

In that game, coach Brett Sippel thought his team didn't play with enough energy. That

wasn't a problem against the Frontiers on Wednesday as the Lakemen outrebounded their guests,

33-29, grabbing 27 defensive rebounds.

"I thought we did a good job of holding them to one shot," Sippel said. "It's a big win for

us. Riverside is expected to contend for the Yale Cup this year. I think we played a good

overall team game with a lot guys contributing."

Wilson point guard Brennan Moxham (14 points, four assists) did a really good job handling

Riverside's full-court pressure, Sippel said.

John Vincent had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and Collin Okoniewski had 10

points for Wilson.

Amherst to dedicate gym Amherst will dedicate its

renovated gym Friday in memory of late coach Robert "Bob" Hettler. The ceremony begins with a

reception at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria.

The basketball court will be dedicated at 7:10 p.m. prior to the start of the Amherst-

Springville boys basketball game. Hettler was the winningest coach in Amherst history.

Hettler coached boys basketball from 1940-77 — posting a 514-113 record, leading the

Tigers to 23 league championships, five Section VI titles and eight perfect seasons.
