Star football quarterback Joe Licata passed up Saturday's Connolly Cup football banquet
so that he could play with the Williamsville South boys basketball team in the Glens
Falls Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. The decision turned out to be a winning one.
While his parents stood in for him at the Connolly Cup affair, Licata scored 20 points,
including five three-point baskets as the Billies defeated III-Marcellus, 65-59, to win the
tournament's championship game, which was played at Adirondack Community College in
Queensbury.
Tournament MVP Mark Coppola, who had a school-record 17 assists in Friday night's win over
Ogdensburg of Section X, contributed six more assists and had six steals to finish with 13 in
the tournament.
Licata and Phil Stasiak, who scored 19 in Saturday's victory, made the All-Tournament team.
"Marcellus was a very good team. They went 19-4 last year and they were ranked as the No. 3
team in Section III (Syracuse area) before the season," said South coach Al Monaco.
South went on a 12-0 run in the last 1:55 of the first half to go in front, 40-30.
Marcellus was still hanging around, 59-55, with 1:30 left in the game before South put it away
by making six straight free throws, including 4-of-4 effort by Kevin O'Connell.
Will Fiacchi had 25 points for Marcellus.
Kats win Lockport title
Middle College followed up Friday's attention-getting win over St. Joe's by
routing host Lockport, 79-47, to win the Lockport Rotary Club boys basketball
tournament.
Justin Stokes had 22 points and seven assists to earn MVP honors, while Darale Young had 20
points, seven assists and Davon Alexander contributed 17 points and 17 rebounds. Sean Mulhern
had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Middle College forced 18 turnovers, including seven during a 25-6 fourth quarter, as the
second-year Kats won their second in-season tournament. They captured the Bennett Tournament
last year.
Greg D. Martin Tournament: Kenmore East beat East Aurora, 63-40, using a
relentless man-to-man defense to wear down the Blue Devils in the second half.
Kenmore East led, 25-23, at halftime and stretched it to 41-33 after three quarters before
putting away an EA team that rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit Thursday to earn a
spot in the final. Tournament MVP Kevin Wagner had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Dorian
Mayham added 16 points.
Olean Tournament: Olean coach Jeff Anastasia hopes he never runs out of Moores.
Alex Moore, a 6-foot-4 senior and the third brother to play for the Huskies, scored 22
points Saturday afternoon to lead Olean to a 58-47 win over defending Section V Class A
champion Batavia in the tournament final.
Moore follows his brothers Zack and Sam at Olean.
"Zack is our all-time leading scorer and Sam was MVP of our state tournament team two years
ago," Anastasia said. And there is another Moore brother, a sixth-grader, in the pipeline.
Zack and Sam play at Pitt-Bradford where their father, Andrew, is head basketball coach.
Their uncle, Kevin Moore, is head coach at Fredonia State.
Olean led by three at halftime and the margin was the same, 36-33, after three quarters.
"We got the lead up to 10-11 points, as many as 13 once, and kind of maintained it from
there," Moore said.
Olean got a big contribution off the bench from Kyle Clark, who scored nine points,
including a three-pointer in the third quarter and a pair of baskets in the Huskies'
fourth-quarter run.
Point guard Joe Palumbo, who started as sophomore on the Huskies' state championship team
two years ago, had 11 points and Ryan Carney, who played quite a bit on that team, had 10 and
11 rebounds.
Town of Hamburg Tournament: Lackawanna gained a measure of revenge against
Frontier in the final of the Town of Hamburg Lions Club Tournament, beating the
Falcons, 79-65, behind MVP Dondre Alexander's 32-point, five-assist effort. The Steelers
trailed by two after the first quarter but used a 24-13 second-quarter blitz to take the lead
for good.
Gary Green added 17 points, while Orlando Santiago had 12 for Lackawanna (2-0), which lost
in the final to Frontier in last year's tournament.
Darius Edwards led the Falcons (1-1) with 28 points.
Gerken earns milestone
With his old coach watching, Lake Shore coach Dan Gerken notched his 100th win as the Eagles defeated Gowanda, 63-47, to win the Gowanda Tip-Off Tournament.
Gerken's coach at Lake Shore (1977-80), Bob Uszacki, flew up from Florida to watch the team
play and saw a 20-point performance from wing shooter Eric Marz and a dominating inside game
by 6-7 Leon Bellomo, the tournament MVP. Bellomo had 19 points and eight rebounds.
"Bellomo came out and cleaned up in the first quarter," Gerken said. "He swatted everything
that came his way. Kind of set the tone early with two monster dunks. It was our fourth game
in five nights. I was a little worried about fatigue but we jumped on them early. It was 20-3
after the first quarter."
Ian Byrne had 19 points for Gowanda.
Eden girls win Hae Jude
Eden never trailed en route to capturing the Hae Jude Tournament title over host
Silver Creek, 48-32.
Tournament MVP and point guard Jenna Phillips followed up Thursday's first-round 20-point,
six-assist effort with 14 points and five assists, while Jessica Jamison added 13 points, 11
rebounds and four blocks as Eden won an in-season tournament for the first time under
fourth-year coach Marisa Fallacaro.
"It's huge for us," Fallacaro said. "It gives them a huge boost in confidence."
coming into the season. We lost our first game by a point [to Cheektowaga at the
buzzer] so they knew it wouldn't be easy. They worked hard this game."
Williamsville South senior Sarah Marcus surpassed the 1,000 career-points
mark during the Billies' 51-42 loss to II-South Glens Falls at the Coaches vs. Cancer
Tournament in Glens Falls. Marcus finished with 16 points and now has 1,003 for her career.
She joined the 1,000-club on a third-quarter free throw.
Pine Valley Tournament: Nikole Lindquist had 13 points and five steals, while Alex
Smith had 11 points and eight rebounds in leading Pine Valley to a 56-47 win over Randolph in
the title game of the Pine Valley Tournament. Allison Nobles had six assists, while Jillian
Brunswich had nine rebounds for Tim Noble's team, which rallied from an early seven-point
deficit in the third quarter to win the title for the third year in row.
Park Tournament: Julia Papiernick's layup with 30 seconds left gave Buffalo
Seminary a three-point lead and then the Sirens held on to beat Park, 32-31.
Tournament MVP Julia Schreck had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Sirens (2-2), while
Papiernick had eight rebounds.
Wilson Tournament: Mount St. Mary won the title, beating Wilson, 53-49, as
tournament MVP Brianna Johnson had 11 points, while Jasmine Shabazz added 18 points and 14
rebounds for the Thunder.
Lew-Port hockey wins
Lewiston-Porter (1-1-1, 1-0) earned its first Western New York Varsity Federation
triumph as Tyler Tubinis and Brandon Washburn each scored a pair of goals in a 7-3 win over
Amherst.
Another first-year team, North Tonawanda didn't have a memorable debut. Defending state
Catholic champion Canisius routed NT, 11-0, behind Brendon Sorrento's three-goal
effort.
West Seneca West earned a 3-2 nonleague win over V-Greece-Athena, with Mark
Kwietniewski netting the game-winning goal.
