Randolph grinds down Dundee

ROCHESTER — Facing an offense that had topped 70 points in three games this season did
not intimidate the Randolph Cardinals.
Randolph (10-1) advanced to the Class D state semifinals Friday night by grinding out a
14-6 win over the previously high-flying Dundee Scotsmen of Section V before about 1,000 at
Marina Auto Stadium.
Randolph, which knocked off defending state champion Maple Grove, 7-6, in last week's Section
VI title game, continued to play stifling defense. After Dundee took its opening possession 66
yards in five plays for a 6-0 lead, Randolph allowed just 100 yards the rest of the game.
"Defense did pretty good, didn't they?" Randolph coach Pat Slater said. "We got shook up when
the game first started. I don't think we were quite ready for them or their speed, but then
the kids settled down — and did a heck of a job."
For the second straight game, Randolph quarterback Mike Maycock didn't need to throw. His
offense ran all 53 plays on the ground.
The Cardinals' response to Dundee's score was classic: a 10-play, 67-yard drive capped by
Matt Hettenbaugh's 2-yard TD run.
"I just stuck behind my guys [the offensive line]," said Hettenbaugh, the game's offensive
MVP honors. "We knew these guys were big, but our guys did a real good job just opening up
little creases."
The Cardinals' defensive line was equally effective in limiting Dundee tailback Steven
Webb, who entered the game with 32 touchdowns and nearly 2,000 yards.
"The whole trick was we could not let him go north and south," Slater said. "We tried to
keep him going east and west the best we could."
Dundee, which entered the game ranked a spot ahead of Randolph at No. 2 in the state
rankings, had yet to run into a defense like the Cardinals.
Randolph harassed Dundee quarterback Tom Pratt all night.
Hettenbaugh (29 carries, 92 yards) punched in his second touchdown after a five-play, 19-yard
drive. Nick Milliman added both extra points for a 14-6 lead that stood up — but not
without a big scare for Randolph.
On second-and-3 from the Scots' 24, Pratt completed a miracle left-handed pass to Webb, who
then zigged and zagged his way for what would have been a highlight-reel 76-yard touchdown
that was nullified by a block-in-the-back penalty.
Ten plays later, facing a fourth-and-13 at the Randolph 44 with 1:10 left, Webb took a trick
behind-the-back handoff from Pratt and had room to run. Randolph's Kyle Luce made an
open-field tackle on Webb a half-yard from the first-down marker to seal the victory.
Randolph returns here next Friday at 5 p.m. to face Groton (10-1) of Section IV (Binghamton
area).
