Top-seeded Williamsville South ended the surprising run of Lew-Port at Hamburg
in the Section VI boys Class A soccer playoffs. "It wasn't easy, though. I'll tell you that
much," South coach Peter Sugg said after his Billies defeated the 12th-seeded Lancers, 3-2, on
Max Mangold's goal three minutes into overtime.
South took a 2-0 lead on a pair of first-half goals by Zack Schwartz, but Lew-Port got a
goal early in the second half by Patrick Polley and tied it when Tyler Diez scored with about
15 minutes left.
"We got a little careless in the second half," Sugg said. "We had our chances to get some
distance between them and us, and we just didn't do it."
South will face either No. 2 seed Grand Island in Friday's championship game.
Grand Island built a 2-0 halftime lead and advanced to the finals on a 3-1 victory over
Cheektowaga. The Vikings had the Warriors shut out until Dominic Parisi scored with .3 seconds
left in the game.
"Chris Stessing was a strong defender for us and we played some solid team defense. We
limited them to three shots," said Grand Island coach Pete Kuehne. "Going to turf was
beneficial to us. The ball movement was unbelievable today. We have a nucleus of three guys
[Joe Fischer, Bobby Ross and Kolby Banker] in the middle and they just took over."
Karl Albrecht, Ross and Christian Gibson scored for the Vikings.
North-Clarence rematch set
Defending champion
Williamsville North and Clarence, who split their regular season series in ECIC
I, advanced to the Class AA sectional girls soccer championship on Saturday at Amherst.
Kristi Putzig and Alexis Koral scored the goals and Katelyn Carpenter had five saves for
the shutout as the top-seeded Spartans triumphed over Orchard Park, 2-0.
No. 2 seed Clarence defeated Kenmore West, 2-0, on goals by Alex Rohloff and Nicole
Lauricella. Ashley Harof had nine saves for the shutout.
North defeated the Red Devils, 2-1 on Sept. 14, but Clarence returned the favor, 1-0, on
oct. 8 on a goal by Alexa Krebs.
Williamsville East, the defending Class A champions, will make its 10th trip to the
sectional finals in the last 11 years after a 4-1 victory over Williamsville South.
Kayla Acklin scored twice for the second-seeded Flames (19-0-0).
Top-seeded Grand Island (17-1) triumphed over Amherst, 2-0, as Jenna Raepple
scored twice and Stephanie Senn assisted on both goals. Kristy Wegrzyn needed just two saves
for the shutout.
East and GI will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Amherst.
McQuiggan's goal wins for Tigers
Katrina McQuiggan, who has a
history of coming through with important goals for Amherst, scored two minutes into
overtime Tuesday to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over Iroquois in the Section VI Class B
field hockey playoffs.
Amherst will face top-seeded Williamsville South in the championship game at 1 p.m.
Saturday in Medina. South defeated the Tigers, 2-1, on Oct. 19 and won by the same score in
last year's sectional semifinals after McQuiggan had given Amherst a 1-0 lead. She also scored
the winner in an regular-season upset of Williamsville North last season.
Amherst had all it could handle against the Chiefs.
"We played them early in our season, and it was a very similar game — evenly matched,
but the level of intensity, of focus in this game was significantly higher," said Amherst
coach Laurie LeGoff.
"Taylor Ramsey, Brianna Brook and our whole defense was outstanding across the board.
[Goalkeeper] Jessica Banning was poised and composed at all times ..." LeGoff said.
Amherst had made it to the section finals or semifinals the last 12 years with LeGoff
coaching.
South advanced with a 4-0 victory over Kenmore East. Megan Hull posted her 11th
shutout of the season. Blair Pembleton and Alison Ferenczy each scored their 12th goal.
