Maple Grove's Chris Secky, an All-Western New York athlete in two sports, has verbally committed to attend Le Moyne College to play basketball, The Buffalo News has learned.
Secky, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior, will sign with the Division II school located in Syracuse, according to his father, Paul.
Secky was a first-team All-WNY selection in both football and basketball his junior year. He and the Red Dragons won their third straight Section VI Class D title in basketball last season and made their second straight trip to the state final four in Glens Falls.
Secky is already his school's all-time leading scorer with 1,555 points after a 2008-09 season in which he averaged 19 points on 48 percent shooting. He is also tops on the schools' all-time steals and assists lists. His point total is 52nd on the all-time Western New York list. He averaged 7.8 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 4.4 steals and 0.8 blocks.
Last season he quarterbacked the Maple Grove football team to a 13-0 season and was the MVP of the state championship as the Red Dragons won the state title. On Friday at 6 p.m., he and Maple Grove (8-1) will play Randolph (8-1) for the Section VI Class D football championship at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Le Moyne competes in the Northeast-10 Conference and are led by 10th-year coach Steve Evans. The Dolphins went 20-11 last year and advanced to the conference tournament championship game.
Le Moyne opens its 62nd season on Tuesday with an exhibition game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, the fifth time in six seasons that the Dolphins have played the Orange, including a regular season contest last year. The Dolphins will play at Saint Bonaventure on Dec. 10.
Among four returning starters for this year's Dolphin squad is junior forward Kevin Roth, a Lake View native and St. Francis grad who was a first-team All-Western New York selection in 2007.
