For the third time during East Aurora's season, Ryan Sweet began a game by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. That helped the Blue Devils get started with a 28-point first quarter. Sweet accounted for 24 points with three touchdowns and six extra points -- his 32- and 20-yard touchdown receptions accounted for EA's only two plays from scrimmage in the the opening period.
Colin Palmer had 13 tackles, a sack and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for 65 yards for a score. All three of Mark Gampietro's completions (he had eight attempts) went for touchdowns that totaled 88 yards. Evan Horton rushed seven times for 66 yards.
At Lockport's Max Lederer Field, Lockport overcame five turnovers to beat visiting Jamestown, 26-14.
Jamestown jumped out to a short-lived 7-0 lead in a 4-yard run by Dylan Monroe on its first drive of the second quarter. Monroe led all rushers with 159 yards on 30 carries.
Lockport answered scoring on four straight possessions starting with its first possession in the second quarter. Deshaan Vincent and and Jake Chenez caught touchdown passes from Kevin Bronson, David Fluellen scored on a 54-yard run and Bronson added a 14 yard run.
The scoring helped ease the pain from a first quarter in which Lockport fumbled twice, including once on the very first play of the game.
Linebacker Luke Rankie had 17 tackles for the Lions.
In Monsignor Martin Association action, senior quarterback Matt Rosenhahn rushed for 105 of his game-high 126 yards in the first half and scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards in leading St. Joe's to a 20-0 win over Cardinal O'Hara.
The Marauders won their third straight game and improved to 4-4 in ending a two-game losing streak to the Monsignor Martin Association's defending small school champion.
St. Joe's offensive and defensive lines dominated this matchup between the top teams in the
Town of Tonawanda. St. Joe's rushed for 186 yards, while holding the Hawks to a total of 122
yards in offense. St. Joe's held O'Hara to 13 yards in the first half and no first downs on
its four possessions.
The Marauders set the tone on the game's first offensive drive -- a 15-play, 70-yard drive
in 8:06 capped by Jeff Bellanca's 2-yard TD run. They led 14-0 at halftime.
O'Hara (5-2) had a couple chances to make things interesting in the second half following a
fumbled option pitch by Rosenhahn and a bad snap on a punt. The latter, early in the fourth
quarter, gave the Hawks first-and-goal from the 3. But St. Joe's defense came up huge each
time -- the latter stand aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty on O'Hara after it had
reached the 2.
