The two games that were expected to be among the best of the final Friday of the Section VI

regular season sure lived up to the hype. Both went down to two-point conversions in the final

seconds.

No. 1 large school Lancaster survived its trip to No. 4 small school Depew,

holding on for a 41-40 victory in overtime after Depew stormed back from a 22-point deficit.

In a key Class A game between ranked large schools, No. 6 large school Hamburg held

on to beat No. 5 Williamsville South, 23-22.

At one point, Lancaster had a 34-12 lead on Depew in the fourth quarter. Any other game

might have been over. But not when it's Lancaster-Depew.

Depew charged back with 22 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game but Lancaster

survived with a 41-40 victory before an estimated 5,000 at its newly refurbished Constantino

Complex.

After the teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime period, Depew went for the

two-point conversion. Anthony Emmanuele caught a pass from sophomore quarterback Aaron Ertel,

but Emmanuele was inches out of bounds and the conversion was no good.

"If I had to go in battle, I'd want to go with those guys -- they just played their hearts

out," said Depew coach Dan McGrath. "Not only was there no quit in them, which we knew

already, they just decided that they were going to get this done."

Emmanuele was tremendous for Depew (5-2), moving from his tight end spot to tailback, where

he ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns, including a 1-yard score that tied the game late in

the fourth. Depew, which was forced to go for two most of the night due to injuries affecting

its kicking game, went for two on that touchdown and failed.

In the overtime, Justin Juda (10 carries, 63 yards; 4 for 13, 54 yards passing) ran for an

8-yard score and Lancaster got the extra point from Alex Debbins. Depew answered with a score

when Aaron Rybak (five catches, 123 yards) scored his third touchdown on a pass from Ertel (17

for 29, 244 yards).

Zack Maryniewski had a thrilling game for Lancaster (7-0), running for 124 yards and three

touchdowns and also scoring on an 84-yard kickoff return. His 11-yard run put Lancaster up,

34-12, late in the third quarter.

"Dan McGrath is leading a team that is going to do damage in the playoffs, that's for

sure," said Lancaster coach Len Jankiewicz, who was lamenting the loss of key players but did

not elaborate on which ones. "It really is a somber locker room. The game is a blur. We're

losing kids due to injuries. The way they're going down it's like they are being shot by

snipers in the stands. ... There are knees, concussions -- at practice we'll

probably have more people gimping around than are able. The kids feel for their teammates."

At Hamburg, it was guts, heart and a big hit by linebacker Michael Davison that helped the

Bulldogs (5-1) knock off previously undefeated Williamsville South (5-1).

Davison tackled Mark Coppola in the open field to stop South's two-point conversion with 17

seconds left, allowing the Bulldogs to pull out a heartstopping win.

"We were in combination man-zone defense. Coppola broke free and Michael make the play,"

said Hamburg coach Mike McFadden. "We're happy with the guts and heart we showed."

Hamburg's Nico Zarcone may not have been the quarterback fans came to see, but he still put

on a show. He rushed for 185 yards, threw for 85, ran for two scores and threw for another.

His counterpart, Joe Licata, was 16 of 37 for 215 yards, two TD and two interceptions.

"That Licata is a real special kid. If I'm not playing him, I really like watching him,"

said McFadden. "Our main focus was to put pressure on him. We didn't see him pressured. We got

a couple shots on him and caused him to throw two interceptions. When we got pressure on him

he didn't convert those plays."

Class AA South

Jamestown 14, Clarence 7: Dylan Monroe carried 20 times for 107 yards and a

tiebreaking touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Red Raiders (3-4, 3-2) clinched a playoff

berth. Akini Aluko-Watson added three carries for 91 yards. Jamestown got a critical

interception and a 41-yard return by Tim Rasmussen with eight minutes left in game.

Orchard Park 33, Frontier 0: Okoya Anderson rushed 25 times for 129 yards and three

touchdowns to lead the Quakers (6-1, 4-1) who will host a playoff game next week as the No.2

seed from AA South. The Orchard Park defense forced six fumbles and recorded an interception

while Gary Davies had seven tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a pair of fumbles.

Albion 27, Medina 26: The Purple Eagles won by stopping a two-point conversion in

the game's final seconds erasing the heartbreak of losing the same way last year. Defensive tackle Kyle

Moore was credited with the game-winning stop on an option play with 35 seconds left. Albion

now leads the series, 51-39-4. Medina won last year's game, 28-27.

"It was sxciting to see two small towns playing football to the end," said first-year Albion

coach Tony Osburn. "This was almost a mirror of last year. We were fortunate to pull it out."

Medina had one last chance to win the game after recovering the onside kick. The Mustangs

drove to the Albion 20-yard line, but fumbled the shotgun snap with 7 seconds left.

Class B South

Lackawanna 22, Alden 12: Sophomore Keith Taggart had 185 yards on 23 carries,

including a 46-yard touchdown run as the visiting Steelers knocked Alden out of the division title race.

The Steelers trailed, 12-6, in the third quarter before Christian Cheatom and Brett Dechent

caught TD passes from Vinny Luka.

"All season long we've been a work in progress," said coach Bruce Lakso. "Our young guys

are really learning what it takes to be a succcesful team. For the last three-four weeks our

motto has been: discipline and finish the game. We've been doing that the last couple weeks."

The Steelers will be watching tonight's 6:30 East Aurora at Olean game. If Olean wins,

Lackawanna wins the division. If East Aurora win, East Aurora wins the division.

Pioneer 42, Springville 14: Junior running back Bill Asquith rushed 15 times for 132

yards and a pair of touchdowns as Pioneer cruised. Sophomore Corey Vail had two rushing

touchdowns and also made 11 tackles and recorded a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery for

Falconer for the 13 straight time. The Trojans jumped out to a quick lead and beat the Falcons

series.

"It's a big rivalry game, but it was also nice to get everyone into the game," said coach

Jay Sirianni.

Southwestern held Falconer to 49 total yards. Corey Carlson had nine tackles and Will

Sleggs added eight. Levi Bursch rushed for 152 yards on just five carries. Southwestern, the

No. 1 small school in The Buffalo News poll, moves to 7-0.

a pair of touchdowns to lead Silver Creek (5-2) to the Class D Central win. Quarterback Cody
