West Seneca East senior pitcher Chelsea Dustin pitched a perfect game to give the

Trojans a perfect season in their league.

Dustin struck out 19 batters as West Seneca East beat visiting Sweet Home, 5-0, to

finish 12-0 in ECIC II.

The only two balls put into play by the Panthers (5-7 ECIC II) were calmly taken care of in

the infield. There was a slow grounder to second base in the third inning and a relatively

harmless bunt that was caught by Dustin in the air in the fourth.

Fifteen of the 19 strikeouts were swinging strikeouts, and none of the strikeouts were on

counts with more than two balls. Only one batter went to a full count against Dustin (13-0),

and that at-bat that ended with the ground out.

"She's been phenomenal," first-year East coach Sam Gioia said of Dustin.

Dustin also had three doubles and three RBIs for West Seneca East (14-4), which is ranked

fourth among large schools. Senior Lauren Bujnicki was 4 for 4 with a double and a run while

senior Tina Schwartzmeyer had three hits. East took a 2-0 lead after the first inning thanks

to Dustin's two-run double.

"In the beginning of the year we knew we had the potential to do this great," said senior

Tina Schwartzmeyer. "It's just great that all the girls came together and did it."

Depew softball stops Clarence

What a week it has been for the Depew softball team.

The Wildcats had extra-inning walk-off wins against Maryvale (eight innings on Monday) and

Lancaster (nine innings on Tuesday), and Thursday afternoon it handed top-ranked large school

Clarence its first of the season.

Jessica Puskar and Ashley Nunz hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the seventh

and sophomore pitcher Nicole Gulisano struck out 10 as Depew won, 3-1.

The Wildcats, ranked sixth among large schools, improved to 16-3; the Red Devils are now

17-1. It was Clarence's first loss since it fell in last year's Class AA state semifinals.

"The team is extremely excited," said Depew coach Dan Seelig. "Going through the week we

had those walk-off wins and we're just preparing for sectionals. We're trying to compete with

the best teams around, and knocking off Clarence helps build our confidence going into

sectionals."

Clarence starter and 2007 Western New York Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Sansano struck out

12 in five innings before leaving to attend an awards ceremony; Clarence star catcher

Stephanie Pfentner and Depew standout Alexis Wayne also left the nonleague game to attend the

ceremony.

"We talked about it at the end of the game — I told them, "I believe in this team,

and I think we would have found a way to get one [against Sansano],'" Seelig said. "We scored

early — we really tried small ball today, tried to slap the ball and make them make

plays."

Depew took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Kelsey Grosch singled on a slap bunt,

reached second on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Wayne. In the bottom of the

inning, Pfentner hit a solo homer to tie the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Depew pulled off what he called "the play of the game."

With Rachel Atkins on third after a leadoff triple, a dribbler comebacker went to Gulisano,

who checked the runner before getting the out at first. Atkins broke for home, but first

baseman Michelle Green rifled the ball to catcher Nunz for the out on a close play.

"It was a great play on offense and defense and we made it," said Seelig, whose Wildcats

close out their season at home against Springville today.

In other softball action, Williamsville North continued its strong play late in the

season by closing out its ECIC I schedule with a 6-2 victory over Lancaster. No. 2

large school North (18-5, 11-3) got a five-hitter from Robin Kennery while Amanda Maraschiello

and Sarah Rodems each had two RBIs.

Williamsville East took second place in ECIC II after finishing with a 13-2 win over

Starpoint. Jenna Reilley and Jenna Larkin each had three hits for the Flames (11-7,

9-3).

OP lax finishes with bang

The Orchard Park boys lacrosse team closed out its regular season in extremely

impressive style by throttling visiting Amherst, 21-3.

Orchard Park finished its regular season at 17-1. OP entered the game ranked first in

Section VI according to the Laxpower.com computer rankings; Amherst (12-4) was fourth.

"I thought we played awesome, just very well as a team," said OP coach Gene Tuno. "Everyone

got on the scoreboard, everyone contributed. It was a good team victory. We shot the ball

well, passed the ball well, shared the ball as well as we could have. Defensively we played

very well."

After taking a 6-2 lead after one quarter, the Quakers dominated the second quarter, 9-1,

to take a 15-3 lead at halftime. The score was 18-3 after three quarters.

Both Kevin Kasprzyk and Artie Marrapese had six goals and two assists, while Jeff Tundo had

two goals and six assists.

OP goalie Ryan Cole, back in the lineup after an ankle injury that kept him out of OP's

only loss (to Corning East), had to make just four saves as the Quakers excelled in all areas

of the field.

GI forces three-way tie

Grand Island got some big

innings at the plate early and got some big innings on the mound from Joel Klock late to beat

Niagara-Wheatfield, 10-7, and force a three-way tie for the Niagara Frontier League

championship.

GI, Wheatfield and Niagara Falls — which beat Lockport, 10-4 —

all finished at 10-4. Wheatfield could have won the title outright with a win.

Klock got a ground out to end the fifth inning with runners on first and second, struck out

the side in the sixth and had two strikeouts in the seventh.

Grand Island started the game with a four-run first inning that began with a leadoff homer

by Nick Kellner (2 for 3). Klock (2 for 3, triple, RBI) and Korey Hagen (three-run triple)

helped the Vikings take a 10-3 lead by scoring three runs each in the third and fourth

innings.

Orchard Park (18-6, 11-3) finished one game behind ECIC I champion Frontier,

but Thursday the Quakers beat the Falcons, 4-2, thanks in part to Sean Conway's two hits and

two RBIs and Chris Campbell's six strong innings.

Brad Rush had three hits and three RBIs as Albion (18-1) completed a perfect 14-0

season in the Niagara-Orleans League with a 9-2 win over Newfane. Ronnie Mannella had

two hits and two RBIs while Nate Lester had two hits.
