Ellie Allen, a fixture in Sweet Home girls basketball for the last five seasons, set a
Panthers single-season scoring record Tuesday night in a 60-41 nonleague victory over
Clarence.
Allen scored 27 points, giving her 407 for the season to pass the record of 381 set in 1993
by Gretchen Gegenfurtner. Today, Allen will sign to play at Daemen College.
The 5-foot-10 Allen, who had her single-game career high of 33 points as a sophomore, has
started for Sweet Home since eighth grade.
"We're happy to see her go on and continue at Daemen and at the same time we'll be sad to see
her leave our program," said Sweet Home coach Matt LaRoach.
Lockport repeats
Lockport, which lost at home to Kenmore West in January, returned the favor,
defeating the Blue Devils, 53-47, on their home court to clinch a third straight Niagara
Frontier League girls basketball championship.
The Lions got a stellar 29-point performance from senior Lindsay Burke in winning the
showdown game.
"Lindsay kind of put the team on her shoulders," said 19-year coaching veteran Bill Shaw of
the Lions.
West won a defensive struggle, 37-35, the first time the teams met.
"They really pressured us a lot in that game and we weren't used to that," Shaw said. "In
the second round [of the season] we got a little more pressure from other teams and that
really helped us this game."
Shaw praised Renee Schwartz for her ballhandling against Kenmore West's pressing defense
this time. Schwartz also had the unenviable task of guarding Blue Devils star Jenna Rickan,
who had 26 points.
"Despite that, Renee did a super job on her," Shaw said. "Jenna had to hit some really
difficult shots."
Albion wins title
Albion's Alec Sherman will retire in June after 32 years of teaching and coaching.
He will leave with one more Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball championship to remember.
Sherman's Purple Eagles outlasted Wilson in a defensive struggle and wrapped up the
N-O title with a 40-35 victory. The teams were tied for first at 12-1 entering the regular-
season finale.
"Before the season I picked Wilson and Roy-Hart 1-2 and thought we'd be third or fourth
somewhere in there," said Sherman. "As the season has gone we got very close and became a
team. I'm proud of the kids. They have a lot of grit and determination."
Paige Golden, who was Albion's leading scorer with 12 points, scored a layup with 20
seconds left to break a 35-all tie. Jamie Marling (five assists) made three of four free
throws to wrap it up.
Sherman has coached at various levels in boys and girls sports at Albion, but this was only
his third season as head girls varsity basketball coach. In his first season, Albion tied for
the N-O title with Newfane.
Casey Button, a freshman on that team, helped in Tuesday's victory with six rebounds and
six points in a balanced Albion scoring.
Meanwhile, in ECIC II, Chelsea Oberkrieser had 12 points and freshman KC Sokolski had 12
points to go with 14 rebounds and five assists as Iroquois upset visiting
Williamsville South, 46-41. The Chiefs rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit by
outscoring the Billies, 114-3, in the third quarter. Sarah Marcus had 15 points for South.
Williamsville East completed its ECIC II schedule at 11-1 with a 60-26 victory over
visiting Lake Shore. Becca Rumschik and Taylor Klun each scored 14 for the Flames while
Bailey Weigel contributed 12.
Lake Shore boys roll
Lake Shore made 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter against Williamsville
East and held its share of second place in ECIC II boys basketball with a 71-54 victory
over the Flames.
Eric Marx (18 points), Jason Radwan (17) and Sean Bellomo (17 points, 11 rebounds) led the
Eagles.
Lake Shore is tied at 8-3 with Williamsville South, which overpowered West Seneca
East, 87-56. Phil Stasiak had 17 points and Joe Coppola had 11 assists and 16 points for
the Billies.
In ECIC III, Depew withstood a third-quarter outside shooting barrage by visiting
Pioneer, 71-59. The Panthers hit seven threes in the quarter — three by Lucas
Haskell — to take a 49-48 lead.
Akron (12-1) moved into a tie for first with idle Medina in the
Niagara-Orleans League by scoring 36 second-half points in a 51-33 victory over Barker.
Alex Short had 17 of his 20 points in the second half, including four threes in the third
quarter.
Second-place Canisius improved to 10-2 in Monsignor Martin Association with a 57-46
victory at St. Francis as Blair Helton (17 points) and Andrew Zdrojewski (14) led the
way. Delano Fabor had 14 points and Ozzie Lumpkin 12 for the Raiders.
Marcus Aiello poured in 32 points for Allegany-Limestone in an 81-69 victory at
Dunkirk in CCAA I. Matt Domboski added 22 for the Gators while Derek Honakor paced
Dunkirk with 23.
In CCAA II, Joe Bowman had 20 rebounds and 12 points in Frewsburg's 74-63 win over
visiting Westfield. Mike Bova led Westfield with 27 points.
