Clarence won a battle of state-ranked boys soccer teams on the road Monday, downing Section V (Rochester area) power Penfield, 2-1. The Red Devils came into the game ranked fourth in the Class AA poll while Penfield was No. 3.

All of the game's scoring came in the first half. Zach Pontrello and Joe Stiglmeier gave

Clarence a 2-0 lead before Penfield scored its goal. The Clarence defense stiffened the rest

of the way as Penfield was limited to a few shots from outside the 18-yard box. The Red Devils

improved to 9-1.

Cheektowaga remained undefeated at 8-0-2 with a 1-0 win over Eden.

Gabe Foster scored for the Warriors, ranked No. 5 among Western New York large schools.

John Klein recorded his fifth shutout.

Foster's goal came about 25 minutes into the first half. Dominic Parisi had a free kick

from the left side about 28 yards out. He put it across and Foster shot it in the top right

corner.

"We're playing good soccer and playing strong defensively. Parisi, our sweeper, Josh

Weigand and Mark Visbisky are forming a strong triangle with Johnny [Klein, goalie] behind

them," said Cheektowaga coach Matt Haberl. "Johnny had two huge saves to keep the shutout

alive."

Zach Thomas scored with approximately eight minutes left on an assist from Dan Pulaski as

West Seneca West beat Frontier, 1-0, in ECIC I. The goal was Thomas' eighth.

Alex Bratos had eight saves for his second shutout. The game was a rematch from the finals of

the recent Dan Durick Tournament, won by the Indians, 3-2, in overtime.

Lockport goalkeeper Chris Paradise, victim of a 5-4 overtime loss to Kenmore

East on Sept. 26, turned the tables on the host Bulldogs making six saves in a 1-0

shutout.

The Lions' goal came with about 15 minutes left in the game when Matt McCoy who took a pass

from Adam Kroe and, as Lockport coach Jeff Hulshoff put it, "hit a rocket shot" into the upper

left from about 22 yards away.

Christian Warchocki scored 7:30 into sudden death and John Netter had the shutout as

Niagara-Wheatfield held on to beat Kenmore West, 1-0.

OP, Clarence fit to be tied

The Orchard Park and Clarence field hockey teams played to a 2-2 overtime tie.

Liz Otwell and Casey Young scored for the host Quakers while the Clarence goals were by Jaclyn

Spoth and Nicole Cerza.

Clarence led, 2-1, at the end of the half. Cerza's scored the only goal of the second half

to force OT. OP had a goal called back in overtime when a player was called for advancing the

ball.

"Clarence seemed to be the stronger team, however, our goalie was outstanding," said OP

coach Bridget Callahan. "She [Sara Newton] really kept us in the game. She had 12 unbelievable

saves and stopped two breakaways."

The game was played on the turf at OP.

"It really makes it nice when there's all that standing water out there," said Callahan.

OP is now 7-2-1 in the ECIC while Clarence sits at 7-1-2.

Alison Ferenczy scored two goals and had an assist giving her eight goals and seven assists

as Williamsville South beat rival Williamsville East, 3-0. Megan Hull earned her

sixth shutout for the Billies (7-1-1). The win is South's fourth in a row since losing, 1-0,

to Iroquois on Sept. 21.

South plays at West Seneca East on Wednesday.

Sam Takac had 10 saves as Iroquois improved to 9-2-1 with a 2-0 win over Eden.

No score in 100 minutes

Goalkeepers Kristen Hoar of Kenmore East (24 saves) and Ellen Sinn of host

Lockport (18 saves) came up big as the schools played 100 minutes of scoreless soccer

in the Niagara Frontier League.

"Our forwards could not get it in on both sides," said Lockport coach Laura Scapelliti who

said there were "numerous" scoring chances on both sides.

"Both teams had a tons of opportunities," said Kenmore East coach Chris Robey. "It was a

defensive battle, neither team could put ball in the back of the net. Both had a lot of great

chances, but neither team could finish the ball."

Kenmore East won the teams' first matchup, 4-0, two weeks ago.

Hutch-Tech and Grover Cleveland played to a scoreless tie in double

overtime. Tech had two penalty kicks, but couldn't score. The Presidents managed just two

shots on goal.

A 'killer' volleyball night

Monday night packed plenty of excitement on Western New York volleyball courts. Big kills,

long rallies, fantastic finishes — the evening had it all.

The North Tonawanda girls volleyball team survived a close call winning a five-game

match over Kenmore West in the Niagara Frontier League. It was so close NT had to come

back from a 13-7 deficit to win the fifth and deciding game, 28-26. The Lady Jacks improved to

10-0 overall and 9-0 in the NFL.

"At the end we kept fighting," said NT coach Jessica Anderson. "We had rallies that must

have lasted a minute and a half. We were able to pull through at the end. Defensively, we kept

balls in play. That's what did it."

Delaney Laper had 20 kills and 31 digs and Lauren Metzger finished with 25 digs and 19

kills. The Bulldogs fell to 6-3, 7-3.

In a match that featured two of Western New York top small schools, Immaculata

beat Sacred Heart in three games. Immaculata was ranked No. 5 while Sacred Heart was

No. 4.

Senior Meg Smith ran down a ball that seemed unplayable to finish the match. Smith finished

with 12 digs, Lindsay Nowak had nine kills and Alex Wysocki had seven blocks.

Immaculata improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Monsignor Martin Association.

Sacred Heart won't have to wait long to settle the score. The rematch is Thursday on their

floor.

In boys volleyball, Ryan Wiegiel had 12 blocks, Adam James had six aces and Alex McColgin

registered 16 kills as No. 1 ranked Hamburg defeated Frontier in three games to

move to 6-1 in ECIC I and 14-1 overall.

Aaron Mycek had 15 kills as St. Joe's moved to 4-1 in the Monsignor Martin

Association with a 25-17, 25-18, 27-25 win over St. Mary's.

Trevor Barrett had 20 kills as Sweet Home moved to 6-0 in ECIC II with a win in four

games over Iroquois.

The Williamsville South versus West Seneca East match went five games before

South held on to win the ECIC II contest.
