Hutch-Tech dominates the day

Hutch-Tech had winners all over the track — and field — at Robert E. Rich All High Stadium Wednesday afternoon: boys, girls, upperclassmen, underclassmen, four-year veterans, first-year seniors, even a brother and sister.
While there might not be team scoring at the All High Championships, that didn’t stop Engineers athletes from celebrating by giving coach Dave Sardo a water-cooler shower.
The Engineers won 13 of the day’s 29 events, including five of the six relays.
How do the Engineers do it? “Because we train,” said senior Rochelle Thomas, who capped off her career with four gold medals in her final All-High meet. “I think that’s the biggest thing. There are a lot of talented kids out here, but we train. We train all year round. Winter, fall, spring and summer. And I owe all of that to our coach, coach Sardo.”
On a team that displayed plenty of balance, Thomas displayed some of her own by winning the 1,500 going away in 5:40.8 and helping Tech sweep the three relays: 400; 1,600 and 3,200. Thomas, who will run cross country for Niagara University next year, won the 800 at last year’s All High meet.
“We were proud of the balance across the track and field,” Sardo said. “From distance to the sprints, and from boys to girls. Kids take a lot of pride working together early in the season, and sometimes it gets crowded in the hallways and the gym, but they work well together and that all pays off.”
Dana Walpole was another Engineer senior who came up big on the boys side, and he did it in his first year of competition. Walpole won the 1,600 (4:44.4) and the 3,200 (10:17.0), while also running a leg on the 3,200 relay. Alex Simon, another member of the 3,200 relay, won the 800 for the second straight year.
Marc Luko, a junior, helped the boys 1,600 relay to victory while sophomore sister Patricia won the shot put.
Other winners for Hutch-Tech included Toni Davis (girls 800), Timmy Gleen (boys 110 hurdles) and Antae Miller (boys shot put).
East was the second-most prolific school at the meet with six wins thanks to the performances of Shontai Moye and Adrian Dawson.
Moye, a junior, continued her annual standout performance at the meet by winning the 100 and 200 for the third straight year; this year she also added the 400. Dawson won the boys long jump (21-8) and high jump (6-0). East’s Marquette Shaw won the 400 in 52.3 seconds, edging teammate Terrence Ware by 0.3 seconds.
Riverside had two boys winners in Chris Jackson (triple jump) and James Robinson (100). Robinson roared down lane two to break away from his competition in the 100, winning in 11.0, 0.2 seconds ahead of Mc- Kinley’s Justin White. White was part of McKinley’s winning 400 relay along with Vincent Shelton, Devin Brown and Marquell Milton (44.6 seconds).
Lafayette’s Dominic Smith won the boys 200 in 22.8. Seneca’s 6-foot-2 Ramale White, who is about a head taller than Bennett’s Charles Robinson, edged him in the 400 hurdles but just about that much (0.5 seconds) as he won in 1:01.4.
DaVinci’s Anna Vuich used a strong last lap to win the girls 3,000 in 12:31.0. Buffalo Arts swept the horizontal jumps with Shaneace Cathy in the long jump (15-8) and Cheyenne Chatmon taking the triple jump (32-10.5).
Alisha Lane, a senior from Lafayette, clutched her first-place medal to her chest after winning the first individual race of the day, the 100 hurdles. Janessa Phillips of Emerson went 5 feet to win the high jump.
