Southwestern passed its toughest test of the season on Saturday riding the big-play
capability of a team that has won 21 games in a row.
The Trojans beat Cassadaga Valley, 31-13, in a Class C South contest that featured two
undefeated teams.
The Trojans rode four scoring plays of over 50 yards to beat the Cougars. Levi Bursch had
TD runs of 51 and 52 yards and he also caught a 56-yard pass from Zack Sopak. Sopak also
connected with SE Nick Austin on a 72-yard TD.
Southwestern (5-0, 3-0) had to work to extend its streak, now the longest in New York
State. B.J. Monacelli of CV returned the opening kickoff 97 yards. The Trojans answered on
Bursch's first TD for a 7-7 tie. CV then blocked a punt giving them possession inside the
Southwestern 20, but they were held on downs. "That's where the momentum started to sway back
in our favor," said coach Jay Sirianni. "We scored twice at the end of the first half to go up
21-7."
Bursch has 114 yards on seven carries. Austin had three receptions for 123 yards and Cory
Carlson had 10 tackles.
Class AA North
Lockport's career rushing leader still bears the name Fluellen, but after Saturday
that title has been passed between brothers.
David Fluellen rushed for 260 yards and four touchdowns in the Lions' 42-14 win over
Kenmore West in a Class AA North game. The effort left David with 979 yards this season
and 3,615 for his four-year career. Jhamal rushed for 3,591 yards in a three-year career from
2000-2003.
"He's been our go-to guy for three years," said coach Greg Bronson. "And he's improved his
game and his consistency this year as well as playing on defense [safety]. He's a big reason
we've been a better team because he's been able to contribute on both sides of the ball."
Against the Blue Devils, Fluellen had scoring runs of 41, 23, 94 and 51 yards. Bronson
described the 94-yarder as a "thing of beauty" saying he broke at least five-six tackles. "He
wanted to score much more than those kids wanted to tackle him," said Bronson.
Another Lockport football milestone was reached in the game. Senior LB Luke Rankie became
the all-time career tackling leader with 256. The old record was 243 held by Dion Cheatham
since 1989-1991.
Class A
Grand Island 47, Williamsville East 6: Senior QB Joel Klock was 9 of 12 for 133
yards and three TDs in the first half for the Vikings.
Junior Nate Benoit booted two field goals and converted five extra points. "He's been real
consistent," Vikings coach Dean Santorio said. "He's very accurate and has a strong leg, so
we're willing to kick when we need to."
Senior Andy Lalonde carried 15 times for 91 yards and two TDs and had an interception,
while Brett Dlugosz and Tygue Busch had nine tackles each for GI.
Hamburg 21, Kenmore East 0: The Bulldogs broke open a close game with a 14-point
fourth quarter. Nico Zarcone rushed for one TD and threw for another as the Bulldogs forced
four turnovers in a win. After a scoreless first quarter, Mike Coyne scored on a 1-yard run.
It stayed 7-0 until the fourth when Zarcone scored on a 9-yard rn and Nick Testman caught a
20-yard pass from Zarcone. For East, QB Kevin Wagner had 97 yards passing an 92 rushing.
Class C North
Eden 14, Akron 0: The Raiders scored both TDs in the final 9:49 to keep their season
long winning streak alive. Julian Bermingham scored the first TD on a 1-yard run. Alex Shea
did the honors on the second score from 24 yards out. The Raiders benefited from 25 yards of
Akron penalties on the drive.
Leading the Raider defense to its third shutout of the season was LB Jeremiah Gechell, who
was in on 10 tackles. DL Troy Bigelow led had eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Abling had
six tackles and 52 yards rushing. Brandon Dix had an interception and seven tackles.
Gowanda 34, JFK 0: Dylan Huch scored on offense, defense and special teams for the
Panthers. At WR he caught a 45-yard TD pass from Gavin Mercado, at CB he returned an
interception 63 yards and on special teams he returned a punt return 80 yards. "I've never had
a kid score in all three phases before," said coach Sean Gable.
Christian Van Note and Chris Krizka also had rushing TDs for the Panthers.
Harvard Cup
Burgard 13, South Park 0: The win, combined with Lafayette's loss on Friday, gives
Burgard (3-0) sole possession of first place in the league. Shamari Cheney scored both of
Burgard's TDs. In the first quarter he caught a 31-yard pass from Darren Sanders. Cheney then
caught a 96 yard TD pass from Amir Shanks on a halfback option. From his own 4-yard line, the
play was a sweep to Shanks, who then found the wide open Cheney. On defense, William White had
10 tackles and Ed Sanders added eight with a sack and pass deflection.
Riverside 14, Bennett 6: Tremaine Alls and Vic Goudelock had rushing TDs as the
Frontiers put together their third win in a row. The game was called with 2 minutes remaining
in the third quarter by lightning. DE Adonte Williams had five tackles and recovered a blocked
punt.
Nonleague
Cardinal O'Hara 20, Fredonia 13: The Hawks had seven tackles for loss and five sacks
to win the Federation-Monsignor Martin crossover game. Just four plays in, the game was
delayed 45 minutes by lightning. Rob Davis rushed for 98 yards and a TD. On defense junior
Tyree Carter had 10 tackles and two sacks and Rob Davis added eight tackles, three for loss.
