Timon edges Canisius

The rematch between Timon and Canisius in boys lacrosse proved to be a low-scoring affair.

In a redux of last year’s Monsignor Martin Association title game, Timon again earned the win, this time by a 4-3 margin.

“It was a very sloppy game to be honest,” Timon coach Michael Burke said. “Both teams weren’t at their top performance but both goalies made great saves—David Scarsella for us and Jeff White for Canisius. You could tell it’s still early in the season for both teams. The intensity was there and there was a lot of pressure throughout the whole game defensively on both sides.”

Chris Kane scored three goals for Timon (4-1, 2-0), which held off a late charge by Canisius as Scarsella recorded 16 saves for the win.

In Class A, Orchard Park moved to 7-0 with a 16-4 win at Williamsville North behind four goals and four assists from Artie Marrapese and four goals from Kevin Collins. OP, which also got six assists from Jeff Tundo, has allowed five or fewer goals in all of its games.

Dan Carrow scored 2:33 into overtime to give Eden a 6-5 win over Lancaster in nonleague action.

Kyle Zittel scored with about five minutes left in regulation to tie the game, 5-5, and send it to overtime for Eden (4-3).

Tilkins leads Grand Island

Sam Tilkins gave up two hits with three strikeouts to pace Grand Island in a 3-0 win over Lew-Port in Niagara Frontier League softball.

“Sam pitched a phenomenal game,” Grand Island coach Patrick Lester said. “She was solid and then we played solid defense behind her.”

Jordan Dudish had two hits and an RBI and stole home in the fifth.

Meanwhile, after missing games for rain and snow, Sweet Home finally got to play—to a point.

Because of cold wind, the nonleague matchup between the Panthers and Amherst was called a 6-6 tie after eight innings.

Sweet Home (0-0-1) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Jessica Forti scored on an error.

Because of the weather, the teams played by international tiebreaker rules in the eighth inning, starting with a runner on second base. Both teams plated a run, leaving the game knotted at 6-6.

“Being a nonleague game, we don’t have to pick it up,” Sweet Home coach Diana Calandra said. “We just finished it there.”

For Amherst, Erin Dixon went 1 for 2 with two walks and three runs scored while Devin Gonzalez went 2 for 2 with two runs scored for Sweet Home.

In Niagara Frontier League action, senior Kristen Deschenes threw a no-hitter to give Kenmore East a 3-0 win over Niagara-Wheatfield.

“She was great tonight and our defense did a lot of work,” Kenmore East coach Sara Colombo said. “It was our first league game and our first home game and we wanted to start the season on a good note. She stepped up big time and led the team not only with her pitching but the way she goes out and presents herself on the mound.”

Klock paces Grand Island

Joel Klock recorded 13 strikeouts to help Grand Island to a 9-1 win over Lew-Port in its Niagara Frontier League baseball opener.

“He’s only a junior but he’s a three-year starter for us,” Grand Island coach Dean Santorio said. “He’s got great command of his fastball and he throws in the low-to mid-80s. His breaking ball is good, which sets him apart.”

Klock helped the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Nick Kellner went 4 for 4 with a home run while driving in two runs for the Vikings (4-2, 1-0).

In ECIC III, Jimmy Moss had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to give Pioneer a 3-2 win over Maryvale.

Pioneer (4-4, 1-0) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning then Maryvale strung together its three hits in the sixth to tie the game.

It was the lone hiccup for senior starter Garrett Pauley, who pitched a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts.

On the strength of a nine-run first inning, Orchard Park opened up ECIC I play with an 11-9 win over Hamburg. Tom Comfort had two hits and three RBIs for the Quakers (6-0, 1-0).

Secky Player of the Year

In basketball, Chris Secky of Maple Grove was named ClassDCo-Player of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters Association while Kelvin Agee of Niagara Falls earned first-team honors in Class AA.

Secky, a junior, shared the award with senior Ryan Creighton of Greenport (Long Island), who finished his career second on the state’s all-time scoring list.

This is the second straight state Player of the Year award for Secky and his third overall. Last season he won in Class C as Maple Grove won the state title; this past fall he won the award in football as Maple Grove won the state championship.

All-state second-teamers included Will Regan (Nichols) in Class A, Chris Erdmann (Randolph) in Class C and Joe Caporale (Maple Grove) in Class D. Third-teamers were Alex Barth (Williamsville North) in AA, Ryan Carney (Olean) in B and Ashton Brown (Randolph) in C. A complete list of all-state selections is on Page C6.
