NT advances in Lady Jacks tournament

Host North Tonawanda opened with a 6-3 win over Williamsville East in eight innings in a first-round game at the 26th Lady Jacks Softball Tournament. April Walker had two triples and a single for NT, which tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning to force extra innings.

Also in the tournament, Ashley Nelson and Robin Kennery combined on a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts as Williamsville North opened with a 5-1 win over Kenmore East. . . . Amherst won two games to advance. Kara Stein had two hits and Anna Pleto drove in two runs in the Tigers’ 6-0 win over City Honors. In the second game, Erin Dixon fanned 17 and gave up three hits in a 3-2 win over Mount St. Mary. Jessica Banning had two hits.

The event continues today with 13 second-round games. NT plays Dunkirk at 5:45 p. m.

Balbierz fans 10 for Frontier

Ryan Balbierz scattered five hits and struck out 10 for Frontier in a 5-0 win over North Tonawanda in a nonleague baseball game. Dylan Wentland’s three-run triple broke the game open. . . . Mike Tarnowski drove in three runs with two hits as Dunkirk beat JFK, 11-3. The Marauders (6-3) open league play Monday against Olean. . . . Christian Bannote went six innings in Gowanda’s 7-5 win over Lake Shore in the Mingo Bay Tournament at Myrtle Beach, S. C. . . . Mike Davison fanned four as Ham-burg edged Sweet Home, 2-1.
