Williamsville North won its first football game in three seasons Saturday, and it did it in

style.

The Spartans stopped visiting Kenmore West with a goal-line stand on the last play of the

game, forcing a fumble to ensure North's 17-13 Class AA North victory.

With Kenmore West attempting to go in for the potential go-ahead score on North's 1-yard

line, senior linebacker Josh Halter caused a fumble and sophomore lineman Andrew Berg

recovered the ball to end the game.

"Our kids came through at the end," said ninth-year North coach Mike Mammoliti. "It was the

last play of the game, a goal-line stand, we popped a kid and we recovered the fumble. Our

kids are excited because up until now we had just one league game, so we're 1-1, right in the

thick of things and you never know what will happen."

It was a very happy homecoming game for North, whose last victory came Sept. 20, 2007 when

the Spartans beat Williamsville South, 34-21. North had lost 15 straight -- the Spartans lost

four to end the 2007 season, went 0-8 last year and started this season 0-3 -- before topping

Kenmore West (0-4, 0-3).

Sophomore quarterback Zack Barrett ran for a 1-yard touchdown and added a 27-yard field

goal for a 10-0 halftime lead and junior Dan Teal made it 17-0 with a 1-yard run in the third

quarter.

Kenmore West put on a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring both of its

touchdowns in the period. Dan Hannon caught a 35-yard pass from Christian Feickert and Warren

Hemphill scored on a 5-yard run.

Niagara Falls 43, Niagara-Wheatfield 0: Bruce Hartinger threw for three touchdowns

during a 9-for-20 passing day as the Wolverines rolled to a 3-1 start (2-0 in AA North). Dale

Stewart had three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Falls had 306 total yards to 48 for

the Falcons (1-3, 0-2). Quandry Gray was Falls' leading rusher with 64 yards on five carries.

AA South

Orchard Park 37, Clarence 14: The Quakers (4-0, 3-0) withstood a 1-hour, 15-minute

lightning delay at the end of the third quarter and had an offensive storm on the field. Okoya

Anderson ran 34 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns (11, 4 and 25 yards) while Dave Janca

threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-30 passing. Kevin Collins had both TD catches

-- for 31 and 33 yards -- during a five-catch, 103-yard receiving day. Gary Davies had 12

tackles. For Clarence (0-4, 0-2), Zach Lauricella completed 19 of 39 passes for 239 yards.

Class A

Grand Island 34, Kenmore East 0: Joel Klock had a big day through the air, Andy

Lalonde had a big day on the ground and Brett Dlugosz had a big day on defense as the Vikings

got their first win of the season after starting the year with losses to ranked large schools

Williamsville South, Hamburg and Sweet Home. Klock was 9 of 14 for 116 yards passing,

including two touchdowns, a 13-yard strike to Nick Kellner and a 5-yarder to Pat Gallagher.

Lalonde carried 14 times for 123 yards and scores of 4 and 29 yards and linebacker Dlugosz had

pass, four PAT kicks), the safety, a 65-yard punt return by Travis Bloom (nine carries, 80

152-yard passing day for the undefeated Mighty Violets (3-0). Trenton Harris had eight tackles

and three timely sacks for Lafayette. Grover fell to 1-2.

Riverside 38, East 6: In a battle between teams that lost their openers but bounced

back last week with wins, the Frontiers got great performances from several players, including

Terrell Bolden (13 carries, 116 yards, TD) and Justin Stokes (two interceptions, four passes

defensed).

"Terrell had a tremendous game rushing and the offensive line, led by seniors Sean Mulhern

and Pat Johnson, played a tremendous game," said Riverside coach Tony Truilizio. "We ran Pat's

way a lot -- he's the left tackle."

Riverside, which took an 18-6 halftime lead, rushed for 301 yards on 35 carries, including

five touchdowns. Victor Goudelock had 12 carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns and Tremaine

Alls ran eight times for 63 yards and two scores. Willie Jefferson had nine tackles and a

sack.

The Frontiers are 2-1 after following an opening loss to Burgard with big wins over South

Park and East (1-2), which was coming off an 18-6 win over Grover Cleveland.

McKinley 28, Hutch-Tech 22: Markell Ingram ran for two touchdowns and threw for

another as the Macks (1-2) edged winless Hutch-Tech. Chad Nephews forced a fourth-quarter

fumble that was recovered by Cameron Mitchell and the Macks ran out the final seven minutes.

Cassadaga Valley 26, Gowanda 7: B.J. Monacelli ran for 180 yards and three

touchdowns on 19 carries as the Cougars remained undefeated entering next week's big Class C

South game with defending state champion Southwestern. Cassadaga Valley had 256 total rushing

yards while Alex Wiffman (11 tackles) and Andrew Pingitore (eight) stood out on defense.

Gowanda is 1-3.

V-Bishop Kearney 24, Canisius 23: The Crusaders committed five of its six turnovers

in the first half as Kearney took a 18-0 lead. Canisius rallied to take a 23-18 lead in the

fourth quarter before Kearney regained the lead. The Crusaders (1-3) then drove the field in

the last minute but a run by Ricky Pringle (17 carries, 142 yards, three touchdowns) at the

3-yard line was stuffed in the final seconds. The turnovers gave Bishop Kearney, the

10th-ranked team in the state Class C poll, the ball inside the Canisius 40 on the Knights'

first three possessions. Jimmy Gaines had 13 tackles while Paul Rubino had three sacks for

Canisius. Travis Eman was 6-for-23 passing for 119 yards and two interceptions.

V-Aquinas 42, St. Joe's 7: The Marauders became the latest Monsignor Martin large

school to be pounded by the Rochester power and defending Section V Class A champion. The

Little Irish, ranked fourth in the state in Class A (Sweet Home is first), got three rushing

touchdowns from Blake Messina and took a 29-7 lead at halftime. Aquinas beat visiting

Canisius, 19-0, to open the season and thumped St. Francis, 36-7, in Rochester last week.

St. Joe's quarterback Matt Rosenhahn had nine carries for 94 yards and was 12-of-19 passing

for 94 yards. Nick Hall had six catches for 52 yards. Christian Didas had two sacks and

Dominic Bargnesi had 14 tackles.

St. Joe's (1-3) plays its first league game next week, and it is a big one as they head to

rival Canisius.

St. Ignatius (Ohio) 30, St. Francis 14: The national power from Cleveland, rated

fifth in the Midwest by USA Today, had a 10-0 halftime lead and went up 28-0 before two

second-half scores by the Red Raiders (2-2).

"We had the ball two if not three times inside the 10 and came away with no points, and you

need to score when you have those opportunities," said St. Francis coach Jerry Smith. "I'm

proud of our guys, they played real, real tough."

Mike Chuchla was 20 of 45 for 283 yards passing, including 11 connections with Adam Redden

(193 yards). Joe Smith had eight tackles and two sacks while Desmond Howard had seven tackles

and two sacks.

"We definitely played a lot better than what we did at Aquinas [last week]," Smith said.

"Hats off to our kids for playing a team ranked in the country like that. One thing I was

really glad for this year was they didn't take any of their starters out until a minute left.

Our guys showed a lot of guts."

Williamsville East 20, Timon/St. Jude 7: Jon Crawford carried 22 times for 159 yards

and a touchdown while Todd Therion had 10 tackles, three sacks and a 36-yard fumble recovery

for a score as the Flames (2-2) scored all of its points in the second half. Mike Wheeler had

14 tackles while M.P. Joseph had 13 for East. This was the final meeting of Monsignor Martin

large schools against Section VI this year -- St. Joe's beat Niagara Falls in Week One and

Canisius beat Jamestown last week. Timon fell to 1-3.

V-Honeoye Falls-Lima 34: St. Mary's 6: Junior tailback James Smith rushed for 102

yards on 10 carries, scoring five TDs on runs of 5, 1, 14, 10 and 61 yards for unbeaten HF-L

(4-0). Luke Hinton's second-quarter 4-yard TD run pulled St. Mary's (1-3) within a point

before the hosts pulled away.
