Southwestern and Lackawanna may be ranked 1-2 in the News' Small School Poll,

but on Friday night it sure didn't look that way.

The defending state Class C champions of Southwestern beat down the Steelers, 49-8, in a

nonleague clash in Jamestown.

In this matchup between defending Section VI champions, the Trojans scored the final 42

points in the game after last year's Class B champions took a brief first-quarter lead, 8-7,

on Christian Smith's 11-yard TD pass to Christian Cheatom.

John Mistretta led Southwestern (4-0, 2-0) with 83 yards on 17 carries, scoring on runs of

2, 3 and 48 yards.

Zack Sopak rushed for 102 yards and passed for 56, while Jim Rau kicked a school-record

seven extra points for the Trojans. Levi Bursch (66 yards on five carries) caught a 5-yard TD

and rushed for a 59-yard score as Southwestern led at halftime, 35-8.

The Trojans' defense was the real star of this game, defending against the run and forcing

Lackawanna (3-1) to take to the air. Southwestern, which finished with 334 yards, limited the

Steelers to 102 yards in total offense with Tanner Delahoy leading the winners with eight

tackles and a fumble recovery, while Justin Funcell returned an interception for a TD.

"We went in with the attitude that if they have to throw we don't feel they're going to be

able to move the ball consistently on us," Trojans coach Jay Sirianni said. "Defensively we

just played, very very well. The defense set up our offense."

Class AA South

Jamestown 31, Frontier 14: Dylan Monroe carried 28 times for 176 yards and one

touchdown as host Jamestown evened its league record at 1-1. Also for the Red Raiders (1-3),

quarterback Bret Heath went 7 for 11 for 163 yards and two touchdowns, Ben Bootey had three

catches for 103 yards and two scores and Nick Bennett rushed 11 times for 77 yards and a

touchdown. Defensively, Darin Butts had a pair of sacks.

Mark Schuster rushed 16 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns for Frontier (2-2, 1-2).

Lancaster 31, West Seneca West 8: The Redskins struck quickly and often in remaining

unbeaten heading into next week's key division showdown with defending state champion Orchard

Park.

rushed for a 7-yard score for Lancaster (4-0, 3-0). Joe Yavicoli led the winning defense with

nine tackles.

Class A
