The Iroquois and Sweet Home boys soccer teams looked like they were headed to overtime,

but that's when Conor Martin put his best foot forward.

The Iroquois senior scored with 49 seconds left to give the Chiefs a 2-1 win in a

well-played ECIC II contest. Sweet Home had just tied the game with 3 minutes left. Inside of

the last minute there was a scrum in front of net and Martin emerged to get a shot off. He

then collected his own rebound and scored.

Midfielder Jamie Nantka scored on a direct kick three minutes into the second overtime as

No. 4 large school Lancaster edged No. 3 Williamsville North, 2-1, in ECIC I. Payton Oberg had

the assist on the winning goal.

The Spartans scored first. The Redskins answered on a goal from P.J. Heist, his ninth,

early in the second half. It was a rough week for the Spartans, who also lost 3-2 in overtime

on Wednesday to Orchard Park.

Barker golf finds its stroke

Barker golf coach Bob Roth had more than one reason to be happy after a narrow 227-228 win over Akron in a Niagara-Orleans League

match played at Dande Farms. The veteran coach of 25 seasons said it was the first time in his

tenure all five players scored in the mid-40s, either a 45 or 46.

Barker plays out of Niagara Orleans Country Club, which doesn't have a driving range, so

the team spends much of its time on the practice green putting and chipping. That's not

necessarily a bad thing. "If you want to score, that's the way you need to do it; put the time

in on the putting green," said Roth.

Kurzdorfer draws a crowd

So what was the Kent State assistant track and field coach doing at Lancaster's field hockey

game on Friday?

Watching senior Melissa Kurzdorfer, a multi-time state champion in the shot put and discus,

who also happens to be an all-star in field hockey.

"It's an [NCAA] open evaluation period so they are coming to watch," said Redskins field

hockey coach Kathy Majeski. "College coaches look for how an athlete reacts under pressure in

a sport that may not be their primary focus. They want to get a feel for overall ability,

personality and how coachable they are."

Kurzdorfer did not disappoint as she had a hat trick in Lancaster's 3-1, win over West

Seneca East. She leads the team in goals with 11. Lancaster improved to 5-1-2. Shannon Nowicki

scored for East.

Elsewhere, Ashley Fillmore and Jess Wess had the shutout as No.1-ranked Williamsville North

edged Pioneer, 1-0. ... Kalsie Violanti scored two goals in the second half for Hamburg in a

3-3 tie with Clarence. Neither team scored in the 10-minute overtime. The Red Devils jumped

out to a 2-0 lead after the first half.

A busy Saturday

The Clarence girls swimming team is hosting a quadrangular meet today at 9 a.m. featuring

Nardin of the Monsignor Martin Association, Lockport of the Niagara Frontier League and East

Aurora of the ECIC.

East Aurora looks to defend its boys and girls team titles today at the East Aurora Cross

Country Invitational. The 30-team boys varsity race starts at 10 a.m. followed by the girls

race at 10:30. The field includes the Clarence boys, No.1 in the Western New York Coaches

poll and the East Aurora girls, ranked No.1 in the state in Class B. The girls race features

defending champion Brenna Symoniak, an Amherst senior.

"We run a big-meet format," said EA coach Walt McLaughlin. "A lot of meets break the

schools into divisions. We like to line up 25-30 teams. This allows the kids to get used to

running in bigger groups and bigger packs, that's what we'll do for the ECICs. It's an

advantage having kids doing this before the championships."

* Another big cross country meet on tap is the Western New York Officials Invitational

at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island.

Lockport, Grand Island and Barker won last year's boys races while Nardin, Depew and Wilson

were the girls winners.

Harvard Cup Hall of Fame

The Harvard Cup will hold its Class of 2009 induction ceremony and dinner Oct. 3 at Pettibone's Grille.

Miscellaneous

* Sophomore Tori Frustaci broke the pool record in the 500 freestyle as the Williamsville East

girls swimming team beat West Seneca East, 132-53, in ECIC II. Frustaci swam 5:35.88 to break

the 4-year-old record by three seconds.

* The Park School will host a basketball clinic 9 a.m. to noon today in the school gym to

benefit Owen's Toybox at the Center for Pediatric Hematology & Oncology at Women and

Children's Hospital.

New Park boys varsity coach Sil Dan will direct the clinic, along with Jeff Liebner.

Owen's Toybox provides toys and electronics to young patients at the hospital.

Boys and girls between the ages of 7-16 are welcome at the clinic. Cost is $30, payable to

Owen's Toybox, at the door.

* Nazareth College in Pittsford will host the Upstate New York Hoops Showcases for boys and

girls basketball players. The girls showcase will be Oct. 11 and the boys showcase Oct. 18.

Both showcase events will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
