Hamburg won the championship of the Southtowns Club Hockey League last season. Now the Bulldogs are proving they belong in the Western New York Federation.
“Absolutely. They want to prove they can be champions of this league [Federation Division III], too,” said Hamburg coach John McFall of his Bulldogs after they shut down Kenmore East’s high-scoring No. 1 line and handed the East Bulldogs only their second loss, 3-2, in Federation play. Both losses have been to Hamburg.
“It’s a case of a bunch of athletes knowing they were playing against a top team and getting up for it,” McFall said.
John Iafallo, Nate Dake and Sean Gregoire scored for Hamburg (10-3-1). Steve Gentner and Chris Chapin had the tallies for East (10-2). Hamburg goalie Ryan Tilley made 10 of his 30 saves in the third period to make a one-goal lead stand up.
Basketball
Randolph overcame a 52- point, 24-rebound performance by Franklinville’s Samanta Kopp for a 64-60 CCAA II girls basketball victory over the Eagles. Marah Maycock had 33 for the winners.
Elsewhere in girls’ play, Mount Mercy prepped for Monday’s game against Nichols with a 50-46 road victory at Mercy of Rochester. Melissa Graham and Katie Purcell led the Magic with 18 points each.
Eleven of Fredonia’s 12 players scored in a 59-29 rout of Southwestern in CCAC I. Julie Arnold led the Hillbillies with 14 points. Mary Kate Bongiovanni had 12. In boys basketball, tournament MVP Erik Marx scored 19 points to lead Lake Shore over Gowanda, 54-33, in the championship game of the Jim Emerson Memorial Tip-Off Tournament. The tournament is named in honor of the longtime Lake Shore coach who died in 2001.
Sean Bellomo had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the winner while Jason Radwan added 11 points. Levi Hubbard led Gowanda with 12 points.
The championship game was supposed to have been played on Dec. 6 but was postponed because of bad weather.
Riverside pulled away in the third quarter after a halftime tie and went on to a 67-57 victory at North Tonawanda. Isiah Jefferson (19), Sheldon Brown (14) and Ricky Mercado (14) hit double figures for the Frontiers. Kevin Miller had 18 and Aaron Davis 13 for the Lumberjacks.
East traveled to Rochester and pinned a 79-72 defeat on Ben Franklin High in a nonleague boys game. Dallas Gary led East with 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Domonique Jackson added 20 points while Henry Mingo had 18 points and 16 boards.
Swimming
Warren Weber of Tonawanda and Eric Jordan of the host team set meet records in the Jon Brockhurst Memorial at Lake Shore. Weber swam the 100-yard butterfly in 57.2, bettering the 58.1 by Jason Hoak of St. Francis in 2005. Jordan’s clocking of 58.2 in the 100 backstroke eclipsed the 101.6 by Jason Raw in 2006.
