Grand time at Nichols
The Nichols girls basketball team prepared for its key Monsignor Martin Association clash with Sacred Heart on Tuesday by having a grand old time on its home floor Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings’ Kaitlin Donahoe broke the 1,000-career points mark during a 77-30 rout of Niagara Catholic before an estimated 250.
Donahoe wasn’t the only player in the first quarter to surpass the 1,000-points milestone. Catholic’s Emily Bird did so with a minute left in the period.
The game was stopped twice to acknowledge the feat by each player. Donahoe received a special commemorative game ball during her time in the limelight. Bird received a chance to pose for photos with a game ball after sinking her memorable layup.
Donahoe hit her milestone quickly, canning her first five shots with the last one a jumper from the elbow being the grand shot. She finished with 13 points and nine assists in limited time, while Bird finished with 17 points.
Moriah Camp added 18 points and 12 rebounds for Nichols (6-2, 4-0), which is tied for first with Sacred Heart.
Lancaster wins wrestling title
For the second year in a row, Lancaster knows its the team to beat at the midpoint of the wrestling season.
Thanks to their depth, the Redskins won the 34-team Niagara Frontier Officials Tournament late Saturday night at Niagara County Community College.
Tim Schaefer earned Lancaster’s only individual championship, beating Canisius’ Justin Ranallo in overtime, 6-4. The Redskins also earned second-place points in three weight classes and took a third, a fourth and a fifth place to total 191.5 points. Second-place Niagara-Wheatfield finished with 172 points.
“We were three guys short [due to injury] but guys that we brought came up big,” coach David Young said. “Keith Stoerr [who is wrestling two weight-classes above normal weight after losing in-practice wrestle offs for spots at 160 and 171] being in the final was a big thing. Everybody contributed.”
N-W’s Angelo Malvestuto, the top ranked wrestler at 189 pounds, moved down a class and beat the No. 1 ranked 171-pounder, Kyle Roosa of Allegany-Limestone in the final via technical fall (16-1). Malvestuto earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors, while his brother, Bob, earned the 152 pound title via disqualification after he was punched by his opponent with five seconds left in the match while holding a 4-1 lead, according to NCCC wrestling coach Eric Knuutila.
