Woj has career high for St. Joe’s
Kyle Wojciechowski had a career-high 31 points on 10 of 17 shooting and was 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in St. Joe’s 70-52 nonleague boys basketball win over Williamsville East Monday night.
The Marauders outscored East, 26-14, in the fourth quarter. Sean Mulhern added 12 points and had 10 rebounds for St. Joe’s (4-5).
Kyle Clifford led a St. Francis comeback as he scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter of a 68-66 nonleague win over Medina. The Red Raiders outscored Medina, 27-19, in the fourth quarter to erase a third-quarter deficit. Delano Fabor led the Red Raiders with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Levi Pace of Medina scored 32 points, but was held to two in the fourth quarter.
Nick Mahoney had 14 points and 15 rebounds and David Hill had 20 points and seven rebounds as Clarence topped Hamburg, 60-56, to even its ECIC I record at 2-2. Hamburg’s Caleb Sarikey led all scorers with 29 points.
Pete Morgante had 25 points and Jason Norsen had 11 rebounds and six blocks for Frontier in a 71-56 win over Orchard Park.
Seth Wier had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Thad Wier handed out 10 assists as East Aurora downed Maryvale, 59-46, in ECIC III.
Teams tied in small school poll
Losses to Depew, Canisius and Frontier weren’t enough to keep Lackawanna (2-3) from earning a tie for first place with St. Mary’s (7-1) in the boy’s small school basketball poll. Niagara Falls (5-0) is at the top of the large school poll with all 10 first place votes.
Sacred Heart and Sherman remained in first place in the girls large and small school polls.
Sacred Heart, Nichols to clash
No. 1 ranked large school Sacred Heart will take a 9-0 record into Wednesday’s girls basketball showdown with No. 2 Nichols following the Sharks’ 41-26 win over Nardin on Monday. Wednesday’s game to decide first place in the Monsignor Martin Association will be played at Villa Maria College at 6:30 p. m. Each team is 2-0 in the league.
Sacred Heart outscored Nardin, 19-3, in the third quarter to break open a game that was tied, 15-15, at halftime. Alycia Pontello had all seven of her points in the third quarter. Kacey Bougard netted seven of her 13 in the third. Sarah Healy led the defense with eight rebounds and five steals.
The 15-day layoff was evident as Nichols survived 21 turnovers and 31 percent shooting from the floor to beat Holy Angels, 44-35. Kaitlin Donahoe had 13 points and Moriah Camp 12 for the Vikings.
Meg Recktenwald had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Mount Mercy in a 56-34 win over Mount St. Mary. Melissa Graham added 14 points and Emily Williams added 12.
Raeann Stilwell had 18 points and nine assists as St. Mary’s moved to 8-2 with a 64-41 win over Niagara Catholic.
Jennifer Bognar had 12 points and five rebounds and Meaghan Weppner added 10 points and 10 rebounds as Cardinal O’Hara opened league play with a 41-34 win over Buffalo Seminary.
Miscellaneous
In boys bowling, West Seneca East (3-0) visits Cheektowaga on Wednesday at Thruway Lanes in a battle of ECIC II unbeatens at 3:30 p. m. East is the defending Section VI champion and the Warriors placed third. Senior Nick Morrissey of East is the New York State champion. Tyler Molina is one of the Warriors’ top seniors.
Matt Leitzel scored the go-ahead goal in the second period as Orchard Park edged Frontier, 2-1, in a Federation hockey game. Tim Felong scored the first goal and Dennis Elsenbeck finished with 23 saves for OP (11-3-1). Ryan Damstetter ended the Quakers’ shutout bid with a goal in the third period.
