Wilson and Eden went a combined 4-13 last season. This year they are both 3-0 and their
upcoming meeting in Week Four will be for first place.
Each team recorded a dramatic, come-from-behind victory Saturday as Eden knocked off No. 4
small school and defending Class C North champion Cleveland Hill, 10-6, and Wilson came back
from a 12-0 deficit to beat Gowanda, 13-12.
Eden went 2-6 last year while Wilson went 2-7. Eden hosts the Lakemen this coming Saturday
at 2 p.m.
Eden got a huge defensive play to end a defensive battle with the host Golden Eagles (2-1).
Cleveland Hill had a 6-3 lead in the fourth quarter when it was punting from its own 35. A bad
snap was recovered by the Golden Eagles, but Brian Bianchi (eight tackles, sack, 26-yard field
goal) delivered a huge hit to cause a fumble, which Alex Shea (13 tackles) recovered and ran
in 15 yards for the winning score with 5:51 left to play.
Other big defensive contributions for Eden included Troy Bigelow with 10 tackles and a
sack, Jeremiah Gechell with 11 tackles and Sam Lewandowski with eight tackles and two sacks.
Eden quarterback Kyle Zittel was 6 for 7 for 117 yards and Julian Bermingham ran 16 times
for 60 yards. Ron Lawrence had a 1-yard run in the first quarter for the Golden Eagles.
Bianchi's field goal made it 6-3 in the second quarter.
Wilson will play in Eden for the second straight week. The Lakemen played there Saturday
due to Gowanda's home field being in disrepair after last month's flooding, and they came back
from a 12-0 deficit in the second half.
Gowanda (1-2) took a 12-0 lead on a 25-yard TD run by Christian Van Note (20 carries, 157
yards) and a 5-yard run by John Schott, but the Panthers failed on their point-after tries.
Wilson's Ethan Baker caught a 26-yard pass from John Vincent in the third quarter, which
was followed by what would be a crucial extra-point kick by Cody Reimers. A 7-yard TD run by
Nathan Meiers (19 carries, 122 yards) in the fourth quarter put Wilson ahead for good.
Pat Walch had two interceptions and Baker had one for Wilson. Kris Kruszka had 19 carries
for 107 yards while Alex Mercado had eight tackles for Gowanda.
Class AA North
North Tonawanda 28, Kenmore West 7: Aaron Davis ran 12 times for 130 yards and scored two
touchdowns as the No. 3 large school did all its scoring in the first half to roll to 3-0.
Davis got the Lumberjacks (2-0 AA North) running to a 14-0 first-quarter start with a 65-yard
touchdown run and a 25-yard scoring pass from Mike Tuzzo. Dominic Montesanti (20 yards) and
Derek Bloomfield (48) added long runs in the second quarter. Kenmore West (0-3, 0-2 AA North)
scored its lone TD on Warren Hemphill's 60-yard run in the third quarter.
Lockport 27, Niagara-Wheatfield 12: David Fluellen ran 33 times for 195 yards and two
touchdowns — and also added a 15-yard interception return for a score — as the
No. 10 large school Lions (2-1, 2-0 Class AA North) did all of their scoring after halftime.
Fluellen runs of 20 and 5 yards put Lockport up, 13-12, after three quarters. Kevin Bronson
completed 5 of 8 passes for 79 yards and had a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Lockport
rushed for 220 of its 304 yards. Lockport's Luke Rankle had 10 tackles. Niagara-Wheatfield ran
for 106 of its 171 yards while James Donner topped its tacklers with 12 stops. The Falcons
took the lead on a 39-yard pass to Justin Leone from Michael Hardy (11 for 22, 65 yards) and a
6-yard run by William Cody (15 rushes, 41 yards).
Class A
Sweet Home 51, Grand Island 30: The Class A rivals had another doozy in which the defending
state champion Panthers (3-0) rallied after GI (0-3) took a 22-18 lead with 5:13 left in the
third quarter.
Jon McMahon threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns on 11-of-26 passing as Sweet Home
racked up 396 yards to Grand Island's 296. Jahaan Williams had touchdown receptions of 75 and
26 yards in his three-catch, 98-yard day while D.J. Nettles caught five passes for 89 yards
and a touchdown.
Ralph Neasman ran eight times for 90 yards and had TDs on the ground and through the air.
Grand Island got two touchdowns from Brett Dlugosz at the start the third quarter to wipe
out an 18-10 Sweet Home halftime lead. Sweet Home responded with five straight touchdowns.
Three of the scores came off of turnovers, including D.J. Nettles' 36-yard interception return
on the last play of the third quarter that gave Sweet Home a 37-22 lead.
Steve Spencer, Jon Majdanik and Nick Cuviello had fumble recoveries while Neasman joined
Nettles with one interception.
"It was pressure time," said Sweet Home coach John Faller. "We knew they were going to come
to play, they always do. They went ahead of us — that was the first time we were down
all year. It was good to overcome that kind of deficit."
Iroquois 22, Starpoint 7: The No. 6 large school Chiefs (3-0) shrugged off a sluggish first
half as they turned a 7-0 deficit around by scoring all of their points in the second half.
Jim Kloc carried 22 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns while linebacker Matt Krempholtz
had 16 tackles and an interception.
"In the second half we made a couple of adjustments and we just started doing what we do
and running the ball," said Iroquois coach Frank Payne. "We played much better in the second
half. We just came out flat and made mistakes early."
Class B South
Lackawannna 36, Springville 14: Christian Smith passed for 227 yards, completing 14 of 19
and hooked up with Anthony Fino (five catches, 95 yards) on an 11-yard TD. Smith also rushed
for scores of 4 and 11 yards for the Steelers (3-0). John Brown led Lackawanna with 105 yards
on 14 carries, including a 35-yard TD. Christian Cheaton caught five passes for 86 yards. Dan
Trala had eight tackles and scored on a 56-yard kickoff return while C.J. Myles had eight
tackles. The Steelers will play at Southwestern next week in a nonleague showdown.
Nonleague
Niagara Falls 32, Clarence 30: The Red Devils took a 30-24 lead in the fourth quarter, only
to have Falls take it right back with an 80-yard kickoff return by Quandry Grey and a
two-point conversion pass from Dale Stewart to Darrel Smith. The wild game saw Falls go up
18-0 after one quarter, Clarence take a 22-18 lead in the third quarter, and the lead
flip-flopped three more times in the fourth.
Smith had three touchdowns, one on a fumble return for 35 yards, one on a 56-yard reception
and another on an 85-yard run that put Falls up, 24-22, in the fourth. Bruce Hartinger threw
two TD passes. The Wolverines are 2-1 after losing their opener to St. Joe's and defeating
Kenmore West and Clarence.
Monsignor Martin
Cardinal O'Hara 26, Nichols 0: Senior Dylan Jindra carried six times for 121 yards and a
pair of touchdowns as the host Hawks (2-1, 1-0) opened with a win in League A play. Junior
linebacker Brandon Lyles and sophomore defensive tackle Tyree Carter both made 11 tackles.
Harvard Cup
Lafayette 42, Bennett 8: The Mighty Violets, who had never started 2-0 or scored more than
26 points in a game under fifth-year coach Icky Satcher, have outscored their opponents 90-8
in winning their first two games.
Jerell Hall threw two passes and ran for two more as he ran 11 times for 84 yards and was 4
for 6 for 119 yards passing. Toddre Rogers ran 24 times for 178 yards and one touchdown. Mike
Miller had 10 tackles and a sack while Rashawn Robinson (seven tackles) had an interception to
give him three of the team's five picks this season.
"We didn't expect this kind of start but we are very thankful for it," said Satcher, who
lauded offensive coordinator Kevin Gordon and defensive coordinator Andrew Bush for the team's
play. "Our coaching staff is great and the kids are playing well and I'm just sitting back and
enjoying it."
The Buffalo Bills' Marshawn Lynch, who is currently serving an National Football
League-imposed three-game suspension, was at the game wearing a Bennett jersey.
"I'm happy he was there and he talked to our kids and said hello," said Satcher. "But I'm
glad he went back over there [to Bennett's sideline] because Bennett seemed to be in awe that
he was there. Our guys were focused."
Riverside 40, South Park 0: Terrell Bolden ran for three touchdowns and David Drayton threw
for three as the defending Harvard Cup champions bounced back from their opening loss to
Burgard. Drayton hit Victor Goudelock for an 89-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and
then connected on the first of two TD passes to Isaiah Jefferson for 18 yards in the second to
give the Frontiers a 12-0 halftime lead.
"[South Park] had a great first half — the first half was just two big plays for us,"
said Riverside coach Tony Truilizio. "In the second half we were able to open it up after we
made our adjustments."
Bolden ran 11 times for 85 yards, including TD runs for 2, 2, and 54 yards. Drayton was 8
for 14 with no interceptions as Riverside amassed 380 total yards. Goudelock had three catches
for 109 yards and four rushes for 68 yards. Jefferson had three catches for 93 yards including
a 38-yard TD in the third quarter.
Sean Mulhern had six tackles and 1.5 sacks, Jordan Morris had seven tackles and Willie
Jefferson had six tackles.
"It's the step in the right direction," said Truilizio. "We had to prove to ourselves that
would believe in ourselves. It was about ego."
East 18, Grover Cleveland 6: Lamont Black carried 10 times for 101 yards and Andre Jackson
threw two touchdowns as the Panthers (1-1) bounced back from a 48-0 opening loss to Lafayette
and handed the Presidents (1-1) their first loss.
East set the tone with a 12-0 first quarter which began with Black's 67-yard touchdown run.
Domonique Jackson had an interception he returned 45 yards to set up Andre Jackson's 35-yard
touchdown pass to Stephon Hunter. East made it 18-0 when Andre Jackson hit Domonique Jackson
(no relation) for a 75-yard touchdown. Daniel Burton had 12 tackles for the Panthers.
"Anyone can beat anyone on any given day this year — I think it's going to come down
to the wire because I don't see a dominant team," said East coach Starling Bryant. "We needed
this win. This feels good from a motivation standpoint. You lose a game 48-0 and the kids
might kind of give up — but we had a great week of practice. They're a better team than
what they were last week."
