Regan scores 41 as Nichols beats Orchard Park

Will Regan poured in 41 points, had 11 rebounds, five blocks and was 9 of 11 from the free-throw line as Nichols downed Orchard Park, 74-62, in a boys basketball game Monday night. Ron Canestro added 13 points and handed out six assists.

Nichols clung to a two-point halftime lead before taking the momentum in the third quarter. Late in the quarter, Regan and Canestro hit back-to-back three-pointers to go up by eight points.

Tom Comfort led the Quakers with 22 points. Elsewhere, there was a storm in Allegany, but not the kind

that brings a lot of snow. It was the student section at Allegany- Limestone storming the court moments after the Gators pulled off a 68-55 win over Olean. It was Olean’s first CCAA I loss in four years; Allegany-Limestone was the last team to beat the Huskies.

Nate Keenan had 18 points, Marcus Aiello 17 and Brandon Barndt 14 as the Gators moved to 5-0. Olean outshot the Gators in the first half to take a 24-20 lead at the break. But in the third quarter, Keenan led the charge making three three-pointers as Aiello scored 10 of his points.

Gowanda is off to a 4-0 start following a 74-55 win over Dunkirk. “This was our best effort by far,” said coach Tony Puntillo. “We shot much better from the floor, did a nice job packing it in on the zone and forcing Dunkirk to beat us from the outside.” The Marauders’ Jay John and Levi Hubbard had eight rebounds each and Aaron Benton had 22 points.

Joe Bowman had 25 points and 11 rebounds as Frewsburg won its CCAA II opener with a 71-53 decision over Silver Creek.

Thomas Williams had 24 points as Salamanca picked up its first win, 71-55, by beating Cassadaga Valley. The Warriors moved to 1-3, with two of their losses coming by a combined three points. Barry Mason had 31 points for the Cougars (3-1).

Kopp nets 37 for Franklinville girls

Samantha Kopp had 37 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks as Franklinville moved to 4-1 with a 62-18 nonleague girls basketball win over Cattaraugus/Little Valley. . . . Jenna Phillips had 18 points and Shannon Dougherty 15 as West Seneca West edged rival West Seneca East, 42-40, in ECIC interdivisional play. . . . Junior Jequana Roberts poured in 29 points as Amherst moved to 2-0 with a 54-43 win over Starpoint. . . . Katrina Barber had 13 rebounds and 10 steals as Lackawanna outscored East, 17-6, in the fourth quarter of a 60-58 win.

Flanigan named all-state in field hockey

Junior defender Holly Flanigan, sophomore midfielder Allie Ahern and senior midfielder Emily O’Gorman, all of Williamsville North, were among the Section VI representatives on field hockey’s 2008 All-New York State team.

The Spartans reached the Class A New York State title game for the second year in a row. Flanigan and teammate Jess Wess were selected to the all-tournament team at states. Flanigan scored two of North’s three goals in the state semifinal win over IX-Kingston, including the game-winner with 41 seconds left in double overtime.

Also earning all-state honors were: Leann Stiver of Sweet Home, Meghan Smith, Shelby Hall and Kasey Schreiner of Hamburg, Liz DeWaters of Roy-Hart, Emi Girasole of Orchard Park, Samantha George of Pioneer, Ashley and Alison Ferenczy of Williamsville South and Sienna Dear and Rebecca Quackenbush of Barker.
