No. 5 seed Portville swept three games from No. 3 Panama to win the Section VI Class D girls volleyball championship, at Jamestown Community College. It was Portville’s first sectional title in the sport since 1981.

Senior Demi Kauppinen had 23 assists, senior Lindsey Olson had 23 kills and three blocks and her younger sister, Jenny Olson had 11 kills, seven digs and four aces in the victory. Senior Brie Starks contributed five kills.

“I don’t think it’s a surprise,” said 12th-year coach Aaron Decker. “Randolph and ourselves play in a tougher league and each year it seems we end up facing each other in the semis or quarters. I knew we had it in us.”

The Panthers went through the playoffs without senior middle blocker Alexis Jordan, who suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in a match against Silver Creek.

“She was a big heart and soul of our team,” Decker said.
