Freshman right tackle Javon Smith wasn't sure this summer if he would fit in on
Lackawanna's football team. Two weeks into the season, they don't know what they would have
done without him.
Smith recovered a teammate's fumble in the end zone with six minutes left in the game to
help the Steelers beat visiting Pioneer, 18-14, Friday night in Class B South. Last week he
threw the block that sprung John Brown allowing him to score the winning touchdown against
Olean.
"That's two big plays in two weeks," said coach Bruce Lakso. "This kid hasn't missed a day
of practice and he's worked hard. All summer the varsity coaches kept encouraging him and told
him not to give up."
The Steelers (2-0 B South) came out flat in the first half, but after making some
adjustments, looked like a different team in the second half. Brown finished with 107 yards
rushing and a 2-yard run. Quarterback Christian Smith passed for 92 yards and threw for 65
more. Christian Cheatom had five catches for 68 yards, including 4-yard TD.
Bill Asquith scored ran for both touchdowns for Pioneer (0-2 B South).
Frewsburg 12, Maple Grove 7: One of the longest winning streaks in New York State is
over. The Bears upset the defending Class D state champions, ending the Red Dragons' run of 14 straight
wins.
Coach Terry Gray said it's been 15 years since Frewsburg has beaten Maple Grove.
"Let's make no mistake -- this wasn't a playoff win, but it was a win against a
playoff-caliber team," said Gray. "This was a big one."
Frewsburg's Matt Coe intercepted a Chris Secky pass with 1:13 left to preserve the nonleague win. The
Bears had taken the lead for good on Andrew Dove's 3-yard run in the third quarter.
The Bears' defense had four sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.
"Our defense was all over the place," said Gray.
The defense held Secky to 8 of 21 accuracy for 69 yards. His counterpart, Asa Johnson, was
7 of 15 for 89 yards and a TD. Gray said he played a 4-3, but tried to keep Secky guessing
with some blitzing and played some coverage.
Frewsburg took a 6-0 lead after the first quarter after Brian Thompson caught a 7-yard TD
pass from Johnson. Tyler Rosenberg scored for Maple Grove on a 1-yard run for a 7-6 halftime
lead.
Maple Grove was tied with Orchard Park, Sweet Home, Southwestern and Riverhead (Long Island) with the
second-longest win streak in the state to Rye (25).
Class AA North
North Tonawanda 63, Williamsville North 0: After getting off to a slow start in last
week's season opener, North Tonawanda reversed its field. The Lumberjacks scored on their
first seven possessions on their way to a 63-0 victory over visiting Williamsville North in a
Class AA North contest.
After being shut out, 7-0, in the first quarter against Jamestown last week, NT erupted for
36 points after the first eight minutes against Williamsville North. Aaron Davis and Darrik
Bloomfield each scored twice in the first quarter.
NT (2-0, 1-0 AA North) scored on a variety of draw plays, screens, options and counters.
They didn't waste any time getting on the board in front of the big home crowd. NT scored on
its first play from scrimmage as Aaron Davis caught a 31-yard pass from QB Mike Tuzzo.
It was just the beginning. NT added its second score on a five-play drive that was capped
by Dan Monstesanti's 21-yard run on a counter. Darrik Bloomfield added a score on a 66-yard
reverse, breaking tackles on his way down the field. Davis added his second score as he walked
into the end zone on an 8-yard run. Bloomfield's second TD came on a 55-yard punt return with
17 seconds left in the first quarter.
"We got to get a bunch of younger guys in the game and let them play the second half and
see what they can do in a game situation," said coach Eric Jantzi. "All three aspects of the
game were working pretty good, the defense was making plays, we got that touchdown on special
teams. The offensive line was making some holes and we had a quarterback who could put the
ball on the money."
Devan Moultrie and Tom Sell scored rushing TDs in the second quarter to push the halftime
lead to 49-0 and it was 56-0 after NT's first possession of the third quarter. Joe Medina and
Steve Stefanski scored in the second half on the ground.

everyone going," said Grover Cleveland coach Tony Alessi. "If we going to go down, we were
going to go down with a fight. I've got a real young team. It's too easy to drop your head and
quit."
