High School Extra /ECIC boys soccer wins challenge

The ECIC defeated the NFL, 12-8, to win the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer ECIC/NFL Boys
Soccer Challenge Saturday at Sweet Home. The ECIC had a 5-3-2 record over the two-day event.
Saturday's schedule included five games. Williamsville North beat Lew-Port, 4-0, as Matt
Campana had a hat trick. Williamsville East and Niagara-Wheatfield tied, 1-1. Josh Binfield
scored for the Flames in the first half while Jeff Calkins answered for the Falcons in the
second half. North Tonawanda edged Sweet Home, 2-1, on a goal by Greg Hoffman with 12 minutes
left. Hamburg and Kenmore West played to a 2-2 tie. Williamsville South beat Niagara Falls,
3-0, led by Zack Schwartz's two goals and Stephan Crawford's shutout.
The event was a fundraiser to honor of longtime official Tom Mingle, who died of cancer on
Sept. 5, 2008. The sportsmanship award, awarded by the officials, went to junior midfielder
Connor Orrico of Sweet Home.
Named to the Ad-Pro all-tournament team were: Johnny Reeb (Sweet Home), Patrick Polley
(Lew-Port), Chady Bushnaq (Kenmore West), Paul Morrison (Niagara Falls), Sean Needham
(Hamburg), Josh Binfield (Williamsville East), Christian Warchocki (Niagara-Wheatfield),
Stephen Crawford (Williamsville South), Hoffman (North Tonawanda), Campana (Williamsville
North) and Schwartz (Williamsville South).
Great kick-starts for Clarence, Akron
Jason Falk and Zach Pontrello scored as the Clarence boys soccer team, which reached the
state final in Class AA last year, began its season by beating East Aurora, 2-0, in the finals
of the Clarence Tournament. Falk scored on a header off a scramble and Pontrello scored on a
breakaway that was created off a great pass by Scott Panullo. Hunter Hein needed to make just
two saves for the shutout.
David Mateloen scored the game's lone goal as Akron beat Byron-Bergen, 1-0, to win the
Byron-Bergen tournament for the third year in a row. Sam Torrelli earned the shutout. "It was
a very physical game with a lot fouls. It's a great way to start the season," said Akron coach
Chuck Pfohl."
Nichols girls win Clarence event
Nichols beat Nardin, 3-1, to win the Clarence Tournament for the second time in three
years. Defender Kelsey Ryan scored on a shot from 30 yards out. Bri Smith followed with a goal
on penalty kick and the score held until midway through the second half. Nichols added its
third goal on Smith's second goal of the game on an assist from a hustling Claire Peltan.
Immaculata spikes Lockport title
Immaculata won the Lockport girls volleyball tournament by beating the host Lions in three
games, 19-25, 25-21, 25-19.
Sarah Horvath had 18 kills. Lindsey Nowak added six blocks. Immaculata, a first-time
Lockport Tournament participant, went 6-0-1 in the event, beating Lockport and Akron twice.
The Bears also beat Williamsville South, Medina and split two games in pool play with
Roy-Hart.
