GETTYSBURG, Pa. - If the first step is the biggest, then the Fredonia State women’s lacrosse team should be all set for a good weekend.
The Blue Devils hope to continue their march through the Division III NCAA tournament when they play Trinity here this afternoon.
Fredonia is coming off the first postseason win in the program’s history. It defeated RPI, 9-8, last Saturday at home in the first round.
Juliana Kotas (Lancaster) scored the game-winning goal for the Blue Devils (12-6) in that game.
“We basically had the ball with four minutes to go and decided to stall until there were 30 seconds left,” she said. “Katie Kleine had the ball behind the net. Two opposing players went to double her, leaving me open. I got the ball and shot it. I was lucky enough to score.”
Kotas then looked at the clock and saw that there were only 3.3 seconds left in the game.
“My teammates jumped on top of me,” she said. “I’m glad I got to do it. I’m glad to get our first playoff win for our coach (Chris Case). It’s pretty amazing, especially since I’m a sophomore.”
The road doesn’t get any easier from here. Trinity is 16-2 with a 12-game winning streak. The Bantams are ranked third in the country.
“I never thought I’d be part of playing Trinity, one of the top teams in the country,” Kotas said. “Now we’re able to do that.”
The winner of today’s game plays the victor of the other regional semifinal between Gettysburg and Middlebury for the chance to advance to the final four.
“I’m hoping we can win a couple of more games at least,” Kotas said.
