What to watch today
Frontier Falcons (2-0) at Lockport Lions (2-0), 2 p.m. (#FROvLOCK on #PrepTalkLive).
The newly combined Class AA division gets a great early matchup between a pair of teams that have both been impressive early on.
Frontier, a longtime contender in the loaded AA South Division, started the year with a rout of Clarence (38-12) and added a 24-6 win over Niagara Falls last week and is ranked sixth in The News large school poll. After opening the season with a tough Niagara County rivarly win over Starpoint (7-0), No. 5 large school Lockport recorded the biggest attention-getting win of the young season by winning at Orchard Park last week, 33-27. The victory came despite returning senior quarterback Dan Bronson, son of coach Greg, not being able to play due to a broken collarbone suffered against Starpoint. The win by Lockport over Class AA champion and state finalist Orchard Park ended the Quakers’ home winning streak at 40. OP’s previous loss at home was to Lancaster, 15-13, on Oct. 15, 2004.
Other key games today:
• Bishop Timon-St. Jude (0-2) at St. Mary’s (2-0), 1 p.m. On the first day of Monsignor Martin league competition we have a most intriguing matchup. The Tigers struggled in opening the season with two extremely tough opponents that most teams would struggle with: Rochester’s Aquinas at home (32-8) and at Ohio’s Glen Oak (43-0). St. Mary’s has racked up big scores in winning at Smethport, Pa., (70-7) and over East High (49-0), helping earn it the No. 4 small school poll spot.
• Walsh Jesuit (Ohio) (1-2) at Canisius (1-1), 2 p.m. Canisius’ home opener has quite the scene set for it as the Crusaders are coming off a 3-0 loss at Aquinas, the program’s first loss since 2011 after it went 11-0 last season. One of the hallmark wins of that undefeated campaign was a 14-7 win over Warriors in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

A day-by-day look ahead to next weekend (Sept. 27-28):
• Friday’s lineup is highlighted by an annual showdown as Depew hosts Alden in a meeting of this week’s top two small schools at 7:30 in Class B South play; a C North showdown of two historic powers has Cleveland Hill playing at Lackawanna at 7; Class AA has a potential matchup of league unbeatens with Lancaster making the trip to Jamestown’s Strider Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff; it’s the class of Class D superpowers as Randolph plays Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake at Maple Grove at 7; Canisius plays its first Monsignor Martin contest as it plays at St. Francis at 7.
• On Saturday at 2, St. Joe’s faces another major challenge in Rochester’s Aquinas, which debuted at the top of the New York State Sportswriters’ Class AA poll this week after last weekend’s 3-0 win over Canisius; McKinley heads to Williamsville East at 2 in a Class A Central clash; and there are two fun nonleaguers: at 1 p.m., Williamsville South of Class A South plays at Class AA’s Orchard Park in a meeting of programs which have had plenty of success in their respective classifications; at 2 p.m. Cardinal O’Hara heads to Eden in a meeting of small schools who have been very strong in the Monsignor Martin Association and Section VI Class B, respectively.
