COLUMBUS — Preseason games don’t have any effect on how a team’s regular season might go. Still, it’s better to win such games than lose them.

So far, the Buffalo Sabres have been winners.

They took their second straight exhibition contest without a loss on Tuesday night, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-1.

Marcus Foligno was the star for the Sabres in a game played before 9,009 in Nationwide Arena. He had two goals in the game. Foligno notched his first goal with only five seconds left in the first period, deflecting a shot by Tyler Myers. Then he stole the puck in the Columbus end and scored the game-winner with 5:09 left in the second period.

Mikhail Grigorenko provided some insurance with a goal almost halfway into the third period. R.J. Umberger scored the Blue Jackets’ only goal.

Neither of the Sabres’ goalies had much work. Ryan Miller worked a bit more than 30 minutes and stopped eight of nine shots. Matt Hackett was perfect the rest of the way, finishing with nine saves.
