Playing without injured forward Abby Wambach, the Western New York Flash opened its National Women’s Soccer League season with a 3-1 victory over the Washington Freedom in Boyds, Md., on Sunday.
In Wambach’s absence, newcomer Vicky Losada, a Spanish national team player, led the offense from her midfield position with a goal in each half and an assist on the other Flash goal by Brittany Taylor. Losada scored at 14:46. After Christine Nairn scored for the Freedom in the 50th minute, Taylor broke the tie with a goal four minutes later. Adrianna Martin assisted on Losada’s second goal in the 67th minute. Goalkeeper Lydia Williams made two saves for the Flash.
Wambach missed the game because she suffered a broken left orbital bone in the U.S. National Team’s 3-0 win over China in San Diego.
The Flash play at Chicago on Saturday before returning home May 3 for a match with defending league champ Portland.
