Rookie goalkeeper Kelsey Wys came through when called upon Saturday night, but it wasn’t enough to save the Western New York Flash.
Diana Matheson scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute to give the Washington Spirit a 1-0 victory over the Flash at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester and knock WNY (7-9-2) out of a share of third place in the National Women’s Soccer League. Washington (8-7-2) took sole possession of third.
Matheson, who has converted on four PKs this season, got her opportunity when Katherine Reynolds of the Flash drew a red card for her tackle of Kerstin Garekfrekes in the penalty area.
Wys entered the game in the 13th minute after starting keeper Lydia Williams was injured. The former Florida State athlete kept it a one-goal game even though the Flash was playing short-handed, but WNY could not get the equalizer.
The Flash had two shots ring off the goalpost in the first half and couldn’t take advantage of a corner kick in the 87th minute.
