Why was J. P. still in Bills uniform?
Fast food for thought . . .
• The overriding question concerning what transpired at the end of the Jets game: Why is J. P. Losman the Buffalo Bills’ backup QB anyway?
Losman couldn’t have made it any clearer after last season that he wanted out. He felt he was treated unfairly and that he’s too young to be wedged into the role of reserve. If he received a chance to play this season no doubt his top priority would be to impress other teams. And who could blame him? He knows his time here is finished.
This was the situation the Bills brought upon themselves when they decided to hold Losman captive. And why did they take such an approach? In large part because J. P. is making $900,000 on the back end of his contract and second-string QBs don’t come any cheaper. (The Bills might counter they wanted a QB who knows the offense, to which the refrain has become: What offense?)
It’s yet another example of an organization that lacks feel and any hint of foresight.
• What are the automakers worried about? If the government balks, CC Sabathia can bail them out. Now there’s a deal that doubles your love of pro sports, no?
• I really hope the Toronto Maple Leafs turn it around under General Manager Brian Burke. It’s a boost for the NHL when Canada’s national team is in contention. At least I think it is. It’s been so long, I can’t remember.
• So Stevie Williams, Tiger Woods’ caddie, doesn’t like Phil Mickelson. Isn’t that like Jennifer Aniston’s hairdresser saying she doesn’t like Angelina Jolie? Besides, I’ve seen Williams on the course. He’s as diplomatic as paparazzi.
• University at Buffalo coach Turner Gill’s an intensely private man who keeps his life and his business dealings to himself. But I do remember him informing me when he was hired that football isn’t a 24-hour gig. There’s a time to be at the office and a time to be home with family. He tells his coaching staff and his players the same.
So it couldn’t have gone over well when Syracuse Athletic Director Daryl Gross called around midnight Thursday to ask Gill if he’d submit to another interview. I’m not speaking for Gill, but it’s a little disconcerting that an AD who’s known for three weeks that he needs a coach suddenly develops a sense of late-night urgency. And I’m not saying that’s precisely the reason Gill removed his name from consideration, but a midnight phone call regarding the job search doesn’t strike me as the “fit” to which Gill constantly alludes. By the way, UB received three votes in the most recent USA Today coaches poll, tying it for 34th in the nation.
• Maybe Sean Avery could caddie for Tiger Woods.
• Why would you swing a deal for Tony Gonzalez when you can have Corey McIntyre out on a vital pass route? You do realize the Bills haven’t been the same since backing off that acquisition. But I’m sure those draft picks they refused to part with will pay off big time.
• If referee Walt Coleman could tell that the Steelers’ Santonio Holmes broke the plane Sunday then Coleman can read the bottom line of an eye chart. But Pittsburgh had it coming. The Steelers never get a call. Right, Mike Holmgren?
• Maxim Afinogenov is minus-13 during night games and a plus-1 in the Sabres’ only day game. If that isn’t reason to go to full spectrum lighting in the locker room I don’t know what is.
• Cleveland State’s “Hail Mary” upset of Syracuse on Monday is the last thing Canisius needed heading into tonight’s game against the Orange at the Carrier Dome. I’m setting seven as the over-under on Jonny Flynn steals.
• What’s this? The Redskins’ Jim Zorn declares he feels like the “worst coach in America.” He isn’t getting off that easy. We’ll now open the floor to other nominations.
