Federer, Williamses keep rolling
NEWS SPORTS COLUMNIST

Updated: 07/06/09 1:10 AM

I don't watch a lot of tennis, but Wimbledon always grabs my attention for two reasons: Roger Federer and the Williams sisters.

Kelly's passion for football burns on
News Sports Columnist

Updated: 07/01/09 10:46 AM

He's less than a year shy of 50, nearly 13 years removed from the game, which leads you to wonder how much passion Jim Kelly brings to his football camp these days. Is this his operation in name only, or does he remain an active participant? Does he show up at noon and go through the motions, or is he there from the get-go, highly visible and raring to teach some football?

Golfer puts on a show at Jr. Masters

Updated: 06/25/09 7:02 AM

Anthony Burdi was 29 holes into medal play at the International Junior Masters on Wednesday and it had hardly been worth the trip from suburban Chicago. He sat 14 over par. He was coming off consecutive bogeys. His chances of qualifying for the championship flight were vanishing quicker than federal bailout money.

Fahey graduates from First Tee to Jr. Masters
News Sports Columnist

Updated: 06/23/09 8:29 AM

Patrick Fahey got the bug last year, when he attended the Ham- Am preceding the International Junior Masters. He knew players who were in the field. He witnessed the vast array of young talent that had gathered from as close as the host club, East Aurora Country Club, and as far away as South Korea, Colombia and Mexico.

Economics quiet NHL free agency buzz
NEWS NHL COLUMNIST

Updated: 07/05/09 12:18 AM

Right up until this afternoon, as the NHL's free agent signing period nears its 100th hour, the talent pool will still be pretty deep. The Canadiens could darned near build an All-Star team, if allowed to roll back the clock a few years, with players who were still available going into Saturday night.

Sabres tread water while others swim
News Sports Columnist

Updated: 07/02/09 7:55 AM

The Sabres made yet another blunder en route to the first day of the NHL's free agent signing period. The difference in this one, which was hardly shocking but left people shaking their heads just the same, was that it came in an attempt to appease the masses after years of offending them.

Not a Kid anymore: Crosby a bona fide champ
AT THE STANLEY CUP

Updated: 06/13/09 12:54 AM

DETROIT — Sidney Crosby made it clear the Penguins would win the Stanley Cup when nobody was on the ice Friday night. He emerged from the dressing room in full equipment, confirming nothing would prevent him from accepting the trophy that belonged to him for his entire life.

Call me naive, but ‘Go Pujols!’

Updated: 07/03/09 6:55 AM

It’s easy to be cynical about baseball nowadays. Every power hitter is suspect. Every home run leaves the park with an asterisk attached. But how can you continue to love baseball, a simple kid’s game, if you surrender a child’s boundless capacity for belief?

This year, fan voters didn’t reach for the stars

Updated: 07/05/09 7:21 AM

I know. I know. The All-Star Game is for the fans and that’s why they should vote. I’m pretty much OK with that and the results of this year’s voting, which get announced today at 1 on TBS, look like they will be a lot more down the middle than past years. There’s not the absurd ballot stuffing in places you’d expect such as New York, Boston or Philly.

Votto shows toughness by disclosing problems

Updated: 06/28/09 8:34 AM

With all the bizarre headlines surrounding the game every day, it's certainly easy to forget the human element to it. Once in a while, you get that slap to the side of the head that reminds who and it's actually refreshing in era where ESPN arrogantly thinks it sets the agenda on who and what is important in the sports world.

Sabres drafted familiar names

Updated: 07/05/09 7:21 AM

I had to chuckle when I saw the last names of the Sabres’ first three draft choices. Either John Anderson has been rehired by the Sabres to do their drafting or it is quite a coincidence that McNabb, Foligno and Kassian were the picks. Mike Foligno and Peter McNab were Sabres draft picks about 30 years ago. Dennis Kassian was a forward for the hockey Bisons in the ’60s.
