Lack of role against Miami miffs Jackson

Fred Jackson acknowledged that he was tossing and turning in his bed until 5 a. m. Monday after the Buffalo Bills trudged home with their sixth loss in seven games. Perhaps his sleepless night was a result of not being very tired after watching almost the entire game.
Jackson failed to touch the ball and stewed on the sideline over his limited role during the 16-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Toronto. Once counted upon to change the pace of the offense, he played only six plays and was helpless while the Bills failed to score a touchdown for the second straight game.
“It was pretty frustrating to know that the guys were out there struggling, and you wanted to be out there to help them and weren’t getting opportunities,” Jackson said. “It’s just something where you have to grin and bear it, so to speak. They were out there trying their hardest. I just wasn’t able to help them.”
The Bills had only 19 offensive plays in the first half and 49 in the game. Marshawn Lynch, who had gained 134 yards on 16 carries against San Francisco the previous week, carried only 13 times for 31 yards against Miami. Quarterback J. P. Losman led the Bills in rushing after scrambling for 53 yards.
Jackson probably wouldn’t have made a difference in the outcome, but the fact he spent the game warming the bench took him by surprise. He had averaged 9.4 touches through the first 12 games, had averaged 4.2 yards per carry and had caught at least one pass in 10 games. The Bills, obviously, were desperate for a spark.
“I was approached by two or three coaches,” Jackson said without being specific. “It wasn’t anything that I was doing [wrong], that we just didn’t have the opportunities, don’t think it was something that I was doing last week in practice, just keep my head up. They want to get me out there as much as possible. They just weren’t able this week.”
The Bills were still clinging to mathematical playoff hopes even though it would require a minor miracle for them to get there. For the Bills to reach the postseason for the first time since 1999, the following needs to happen:
Buffalo would need to win its last three games. New England would need to lose its final three games. The New York Jets and Miami would need to lose their next two games and play to a tie in the final week of the season.
Essentially, they need the moons and stars to align, plus an act from the late Father Baker, to have a chance.
“The good thing is that there’s still a slight chance that we can get in,” receiver Lee Evans said with a laugh. “That’s far from our minds now. We need to worry about getting ourselves back on track and winning one football game.”
Bills right tackle Langston Walker felt better Monday after suffering a leg injury on the offense’s last play from scrimmage against the Dolphins. It happened when a Dolphins player rolled into his leg during a pileup while Losman was getting sacked.
“I feel all right,” the 6-foot-8, 366-pound Walker said. “It was just a typical day for an offensive lineman. Somebody got thrown into my legs. I guess it was my fault that I wasn’t moving my feet. There’s nobody to blame but me and gravity and physics.”
Reserve safety Dustin Fox suffered a groin injury and did not return. Quarterback Trent Edwards and defensive end Aaron Schobel were day-to-day with more updates expected Wednesday.
Coach Dick Jauron on the loss to Miami: “The whole thing is really disappointing. I know our fans are disappointed, too. The game was a big letdown. We were looking forward to it, and we knew how important it was for us. We just didn’t perform. It reflects on me. That’s on my shoulders. It was a very disappointing day for us.”
