Max Soria won his third match in four starts this season and 55th in his University at Buffalo career, but his was the only victory for the Bulls (1-3, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) in a 38-3 wrestling defeat against Kent State in Kent, Ohio.
Soria scored a solid 9-7 victory over Alfredo Gray in the first match of the meet but that was it for UB. Angelo Malvestuto saw his perfect record dented when he lost at 197 pounds to Cole Baxter of the Flashes, 6-3.
Kent has some nationally ranked wrestlers including Ian Miller, who is ranked ninth in the nation at 157 pounds.
The Bulls will be back in action today with another MAC dual match at Central Michigan at 2 p.m.
Then the Bulls will wrestle Iowa in a dual match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Iowa City, Iowa. UB lost to the Hawkeyes, 39-3, last season at Alumni Arena.
BASKETBALL: Senior Justin Mitchell (Bishop Timon-St. Jude) scored 35 points, including his 1,000th as a collegian, to lead Buffalo State (4-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) to a 109-99 victory over New Paltz (3-5, 1-1) at the Bengals’ Sports Arena Saturday.
Mitchell became the 20th men’s player in school history to hit 1,000 as he brought his total to 1,007.
Jake Simmons, who completed his eligibility last season, is Buffalo State’s all-time career scoring leader with 2,079 points in 107 games over four seasons. Next is former NBA star Randy Smith with 1,712 in 74 games over three seasons, a 23.2 points per game average.
SWIMMING: Shawn Warner of Niagara won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:03.24 and St. Bonaventure added three more titles to its total in the Zippy Invitational Meet at Ocasek Natatorium in Akron, Ohio.
Warner also won the 500 freestyle in 4:39.41 on Friday.
Saturday, Bona added the men’s 200 freestyle relay (Michael Pilyugin, David Paccapaniccia, Viacheslav Shchukin, Jimmy Martin) in 1:22.32 and Martin’s victory in the 200 free (1:40.14) to the 50 freestyle won by Shchukin on Friday (20.59).
