Frank Turner and Rodney Pierce shared career nights on Tuesday as both led their respective teams to road wins.

Turner paced Canisius in a 59-56 win over Southern Mississippi while Pierce carried the University at Buffalo with 29 points in a 71-65 win at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

In Gulfport, Miss., Turner poured in a career-best 30 points, including scoring the final eight points for the Golden Griffins in the Southern Mississippi Christmas Classic.

Turner hit a runner in the lane with 1:36 left to play to give the Griffs a 53-51 lead. Turner went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the final 15 seconds to grind out the win.

Canisius is now 1-1 in the tournament, after losing to North Florida on Monday. They finish the tourney at 5:30 p. m. today against New Orleans.

“Obviously the difference between [Monday] night and [Tuesday] was that we dug in on defense and got rebounds when we needed them,” Canisius coach Tom Parrotta said. “We showed a real toughness that I’d known has been in this team all along. This is a great team effort against possibly the most talented team we’ve played all year.”

Elton Frazier added 10 points and five rebounds for the Griffs (5-6). Southern Miss fell to 8-2, its only other loss this season to Ole Miss.

Meanwhile at the Resch Center, Pierce was the only Buffalo Bull in double scoring figures, but his career night was enough to lead UB (6-3) to a quality road win over a team that beat Wisconsin of the Big Ten earlier this month.

Pierce was 10 of 24 from the field, including 3 of 6 from three-point range, while adding six points from the free-throw line.

Three players were in double figures for Wisconsin-Green Bay (10-4), led by Rahman Fletcher’s 19 points.

The Bulls, winners of their last three games, play Jacksonville next Tuesday in the first round of the UCF Holiday Classic.

Delle Donne dominates

Elena Delle Donne is most famous for what she didn’t do. The former national high school player of the year left Connecticut after just a few days on campus to return home. Playing for Delaware, she might not have the national spotlight, but she’s still putting up big numbers.

Delle Donne dropped 39 points in an 85-72 win over the University at Buffalo women’s team in the Bob Carpenter Center.

Her 39 points tied the single-game record for Delaware, equaling the performance of Lori Howard in 1981.

The Blue Hens led by as many as 23 points (38-15) and enjoyed a 44-28 lead. But the Bulls made a game of it in the second half and a three-pointer by Nicki Hopkins made it a one-point game — 63-62—with 5:36 to play.

Delaware responded with a 13-5 run to run the lead back into double digits, 77-67, with 3:13 to play.

Delle Donne scored her 39 points on a 15-of-23 shooting, including hitting 4 of 8 from three-point range and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. Tesia Harris added 23 points off the bench for Delaware, which won its fifth straight game to improve to 7-3.

Jessica Fortman led the Bulls (2-8) with a career-high 25 points, hitting 8 of 15 from the field with one three-pointer, while going 8 for 10 from the free-throw line.
