Danielle Vis scored in the 13th minute and Brittany Charles tallied on a free kick in the 59th during a driving rain as St. Bonaventure (2-2) defeated Canisius, 2-0, in women’s soccer at newly renovated McGraw-Jennings Field in Olean.
Junior midfielder Abby Maiello set up Vis’ goal with a crossing pass. Charles, a senior midfielder who helped the Bonnies control play msot of the game lofted a shot from 22 yards over the three Griffs defensders and past goalkeeper Brigid St. Leger.
St. Bonaventure which put a season-high seven shots on goal, outshot Canisius, 14-7. The Bonnies were bouncing back from a 4-1 loss to Niagara last week. The Bonnies’ next four games are on the road starting with a game on Friday at Akron. Canisius (1-3) will be traveling, too, to Pacific on Friday and Sacramento State next Sunday.
In men’s soccer, the University at Buffalo (0-2-0) didn’t convert some early opportunities, then gave up a goal in the 73rd minute by Alex Fisher and lost to San Diego State, 1-0, on the second game of the Bulls’ trip to Southern California.
“It’s a very difficult result to accept as I felt we were the better team over the 90 minutes,” said UB coach Stu Riddle. “Ultimately a lack of communication and poor finishing cost us the game, both of which must improve quickly as we face two good teams at home next weekend in Bryant and Bucknell.”
