College report: Bona wins hoops exhibition
Andrew Nicholson had 29 points and eight rebounds to lead St. Bonaventure to an 82-74 win over Mansfield in an exhibition game at the Reilly Center on Friday night. Nicholson was 10 of 12 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Jonathan Hall added 16 points and six assists for the Bonnies.
"It was a good first game for us and give Mansfield all the credit — they kept on working," coach Mark Schmidt said.
St. Bonaventure opens the season next Friday at home against
Cleveland State.
Men's hockey
Niagara dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 19 UMass in a game played in Amherst, Mass. Ryan Olidis scored on a rebound to give the Purple Eagles (0-6-1) the early lead, but the Minutemen took the lead for good later in the second period. The teams will play again Sunday in Niagara's Dwyer Arena.
• Canisius got two goals from Josh Heibinger and Dave Kostuck while Andrew Loewen provided 27 saves in a 6-4 win over Mercyhurst.
Women's basketball
St. Bonaventure warmed up for the upcoming season with a 71-18 exhibition win over Mansfield in the Reilly Center. Dana Mitchell, an preseason All-Conference selection, had 17 points to lead the Bonnies.
St. Bonaventure was in control from the start, taking a 23-4 lead less than 14 minutes into the game.

Niagara clinched a trip to the MAAC Tournament with a 3-0 win over Fairfield. Stephen Kauble, Levi Tesch and Desmond Betteto scored for the
Purple Eagles (7-8-2, 5-2-1).
• Alan McGreal set a Canisius record for most career goals (25) but his Golden Griffins' team (4-4 MAAC) dropped a 2-1 decision to Iona.
• St. Bonaventure came up short in an effort to pick up its 10th win of the season, losing to Duquesne in Pittsburgh, 3-1. Sam Maheu had his 11th goal of the season for the Bonnies.
Women's soccer
Fredonia State's season ended in the SUNYAC semifinals, losing to Cortland, 2-1, in a shootout, in a game played in Oneonta. Emily Beh scored for the Blue Devils (11-5-3).
Swimming
Duquesne swept Niagara in men's and women's swimming. The Purple Eagles men's team (1-1) dropped a 115-82 decision, despite Nick Squire's win in the 500 freestyle. Niagara's women (2-3) lost by a score of 104-96. Aubrey Kettrick won two events for the Purple Eagles.
• The University at Buffalo split a home meet with Eastern Michigan. The UB women's team won, 166-128, for its first MAC win of the season. Caroline Simmons won the 50 and 100 freestyle, and she contributed to a win in the 400 medley relay.
The men dropped a 180-120 decision to the reigning MAC champs to fall to 1-1. Jared Heine won the 200 free for UB by three-hundredths of a second, finishing first in 1:43.87. Matt Schwippert (Iroquois) captured the 100 butterfly.
The teams are back in action at 1 p.m. today against Ball State. Women's volleyball
Ohio was too good for UB, sweeping the Bulls. Dani Silvers led UB with 10 kills.
