UB 4x100 relay sets record
The University at Buffalo 4x100 relay broke the school record to highlight performances for the Bulls on Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships in Akron, Ohio.
The UB men finished fifth out of six teams while the women placed seventh out of 12.
Dan Schichtel (Eden), Ezekiel Porter, Dan Harris and Brian Smith (Nichols) finished the 4x100 in 40.46 to place second.
Harris also posted a second-place finish in the 100 meters in a seasonbest 10.56, two-hundredths of a second off the school record. Harris was awarded second place in a photo finish.
John Connors (Grand Island) went a season-best 52.70 to place second in the 400 hurdles.
Corey Knox (JFK) set a season best in the discus with a toss of 160-4, adding more than a foot onto his previous best.
The UB women scored in five events on the final day. The Bulls finished third in the 4x400 relay as Caitlin Godin, Jackie Burns (North Tonawanda), Anna Holmes (Pioneer) and Allison Grimes turned in a seasonbest 3:48.07, lowering the top mark by six seconds.
Baseball
Despite a pair of rain delays, the St. Bonaventure baseball team ended its season in dramatic fashion as senior Kevin Suminski’s walk-off RBI single gave the Bonnies an 11-10 win over Charlotte in a rain-shortened season finale at Fred Handler Park.
The game started 50 minutes late due to rain and then was postponed for another 30 minutes midway through the bottom of the fifth inning. The two teams agreed to end the game after seven innings because of a scheduled flight for the 49ers.
Niagara’s season came to an end after a pair of sweeps in other Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games knocked the Purple Eagles out of playoff contention. Niagara finished the year 14-10 in MAAC play, tied for fourth place with Rider, but lost the tiebreaker.
Softball
Buffalo State senior Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park) has been named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III first team All-America as a utility player.
A senior public communications major, Sabuda is Buffalo State’s first softball All-American since 1999, and her recognition marks just the fourth time a softball Bengal was selected to the national first team.
