UB rowers complete best year

Story tools:

The University at Buffalo capped its most successful rowing season by winning a second straight Seitz Trophy as the overall women’s point champion of the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Bulls’ 30 points also were enough to tie for the Bratten Trophy as the overall point champion even though no UB men’s crew made the finals.

UB had two winning boats (junior varsity eight and freshman- novice eight), a second place (varsity eight) and a fourth (lightweight eight).

“This was a fantastic day for the University at Buffalo,” said head coach Jack Wieler. “Last year was a great victory but it is even more satisfying to come back and defend your title when you have the target on your back.

“Yesterday when I brought the trophy back, I knew it wouldn’t be gone from us for long.”

UB’s varsity eight finished in 6:45.22, four seconds behind Grand Valley State but in front of Saint Joseph’s, San Diego, Drexel and Purdue.

The JV eight won in 6:58.09 while the freshman-novice eight crossed the line first in 7:19.21.

Canisius routed Fairfield, 22-5, in the first game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Demske Complex but needed an extra inning to put down the Stags, 9-8, in the nightcap.

The Griffs (30-19, 13-7) struck for seven home runs in the opener, including a grand slam by pinch hitter Andrew Russo. Ian Choy, Kevin Mailloux, Kevin Mahoney, Branson Joseph, Shayne Willson, Steve McQuail and Brian Gibbs also homered for Canisius. Willson had four RBIs.

Mailloux and Mahoney (his 19th of the season) also hit home runs for the Griffs in the second game. Joseph singled home the winning run in the eighth after Fairfield had scored five times in the top of the seventh to tie it at 8-8.

Niagara (19-31, 13-7 MAAC) split a doubleheader at Marist, winning the opener, 12-6, before losing, 7-2. Junior Marcus Spaulding earned the victory in the opener to improve to 4-5 overall.

Playing in winds that ranged between 30-45 mph at Amherst Audubon Field, UB lost the second game of its Mid-American Conference series against Bowling Green, 13-3.

Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls) homered for the Bulls (20-29, 6-15) while Charlie Karstedt (Eden) had a triple and a double.

Three St. Bonaventure errors in the ninth inning helped visiting Duquesne plate three runs for a 7-4 victory over the Bonnies. Sophomore Cael Johnson of Bona pitched eight strong innings but recorded a no decision. Jesse Bosnik had two hits and Kevin Suminski homered and singled for Bona (22-23, 7-15 Atlantic 10).

In Herkimer, Niagara County Community College reached the finals of the NJCAA Region III Division III playoffs, scoring five runs in the eighth inning for a 6-2 victory over defending champion Hudson Valley. The Trailblazers today will play for a berth in the nationals in Tyler, Texas, against the winner of Saturday night’s rain-delayed Hudson Valley-Herkimer County CC game.
