UB already has a lead on UConn

Story tools:

The University at Buffalo is winning its competition against International Bowl foe Connecticut.

The Bulls are ahead at the box office, where ticket sales for the Jan. 3 football game in Toronto are so brisk they may have to ask for more. Paul Vecchio, UB associate athletic director for communications, said Tuesday that 7,600 tickets had been purchased from the Bulls’ ticket office of the original 10,000 sent to each school.

UConn has sold 3,000 tickets, according to Mike Enright of its media relations department. But the International Bowl is the same day when the Huskies’ women’s basketball team, currently ranked No. 1 in the country, plays host to LSU.

A record 31,455 watched last year’s International Bowl between Rutgers and Ball State.

The UB fans sections at the Rogers Centre are 109-125 and 216-226, and center 500 on the east side. Club VIP level end zone seats are $30 and center 500 level east side seats are also $30. The sideline seats are sold out.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 645-6666 or 1- 877-UB-THERE, in person at the Alumni Arena ticket office, or online through tickets.com.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson will be the keynote speaker at the International Bowl Kickoff Luncheon at 11:45 a. m. Jan. 2 at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto.

Jackson will be appearing at this year’s luncheon in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebration of UB’s 1958 team that declined its spot in the Tangerine Bowl after learning of a rule that barred black players from competing with white players on the same field.
