College report: Canisius notches win

Cory Conacher scored on a penalty shot with 5:36 left to give Canisius a 4-3 victory over Mercyhurst at the Buffalo State Ice Arena and a sweep of its two-game weekend home-and-home series against the Lakers on Saturday night. Barnes breaks through to lead BGSU past UB

For nearly three quarters, the University at Buffalo was close to accomplishing its main objective of keeping Bowling Green wide receiver Freddie Barnes in check. But great players stay in the background for only so long. (Updated: 11/10/09 8:18 AM )

Game analysis: Breaking down BGSU's victory over UB

Game analysis: Special teams and the lack of offense in the second half kept the Bulls from winning. A pair of blocked punts led to two Bowling Green touchdowns. The Falcons are talented enough offensively and didn't need the Bulls help to score. (Updated: 11/10/09 8:18 AM )

UB notebook: Bulls must win out to be bowl eligible

The University at Buffalo more than likely had to win its remaining four games of the season to have a chance at a bowl game but even if the Bulls had finished with a 7-5 record there were no guarantees. (Updated: 11/10/09 8:18 AM )

DiCesare: Clawson's long memory pays off for Bowling Green

They had lived with the memory for nearly a year, spent countless nights examining what had happened, how it could happen. Who lets a 20-point fourth-quarter lead get away at home in what amounts to a divisional title game? How does one ever make sense of that? (Updated: 11/10/09 8:18 AM )

5-Star Scouting Report: UB must close Barnes door

1. Keeping it simple (Updated: 11/09/09 9:49 PM )

Victory would keep UB's bowl hopes alive

The University at Buffalo's football program was quite different when Dave Clawson was an assistant coach. The practice field was on the Main Street campus and the stadium had wooden bleachers that were falling apart. (Updated: 11/09/09 9:49 PM )

UB notebook: Defensive end, safety add to injury woes

Turner Gill joked again about how he might have to suit up because the University at Buffalo has so many injuries. But at the rate the Bulls are going, the head coach might be serious. Redshirt freshman defensive end Willie Moseley and senior free safety Chris Storr are both out for the season. Moseley fractured his hip during the Bulls' loss last week at Western Michigan and the injury required season-ending surgery. Storr suffered an MCL sprain during the Western Michigan game. UB to use bye week to try to set table

Even after suffering another crushing overtime defeat at Western Michigan, the University at Buffalo talked about running the table in its remaining four games. During the preseason when the Bulls were picked to win the Mid-American Conference's East Division, that seemed realistic. Now, nothing is certain. (Updated: 10/25/09 9:06 PM )

UB-Western Michigan game analysis

Game analysis: So much for trying to repeat. It will take a monumental collapse from either Temple, Kent State (surprise!) or Ohio for UB to win the MAC's East Division after Saturday's loss to Western Michigan. It also means that the Bulls will have to win out, which isn't a given, either. The defense took a step backward, giving up 500-plus yards to Tim Hiller and the Broncos and couldn't get a stop when it needed it the most. (Updated: 10/25/09 9:06 PM )

UB falls on field goal in overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — When John Potter sent a 28-yard field goal through the uprights in overtime, it not only halted the University at Buffalo's two-game win streak but more than likely ended any chance of the Bulls repeating as Mid-American Conference champions. (Updated: 10/25/09 9:06 PM )

Progress is coordinated effort for UB football

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — When University at Buffalo head coach Turner Gill turned over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Danny Barrett, he expected the offense to play at the same pace as the last two seasons. When he elevated Fred Reed to defensive coordinator, Gill expected to do things differently and faster. After a period of adjustment, Gill likes what he sees. (Updated: 10/24/09 1:17 PM )

Bulls need some scoring at home to get back on winning track

1. Making a stand. Defense was the anticipated strength for UB, but until the Central Michigan game the results had been sporadic and too many players were MIA. Middle linebacker Scott Pettigrew stepped it up big against the Chippewas, with a career-best 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Ditto defensive tackle Anel Montanez, who also re-emerged as a disruptive presence. It’s imperative they continue to ease the burden on cyclonic weak-side LB Justin Winters and safeties Mike Newton and Davonte Shannon. Clarence grad John Syty takes over at strong-side LB in place of freshman Darius Willis, who’ll undergo season-ending surgery on a torn pectoral muscle. (Updated: 10/10/09 7:08 AM )
