College report: Niagara men's hockey hangs tough, but falls to UMass
Host Niagara took a 1-0 lead against No. 19 Massachusetts and entered the third period tied, 2-2, but the Minutemen scored twice within three minutes to win, 4-2, and keep the Purple Eagles from their first victory of the season. Egor Mironov opened the scoring for Niagara (0-7-1 overall), while Ryan Olidis had a goal and an assist.
"We were too sloppy," NU coach Dave Burkholder said. "UMass played a patient and good road game."
NU will open its final season in College Hockey America on Friday when it hosts Robert Morris at 7 p.m.
Men's soccer
Needing a win to qualify for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, Canisius fell short on the road Sunday, losing to Fairfield, 2-0. Canisius (5-12-2, 4-5-0) outshot Fairfield, 10-8, but couldn't beat Stags keeper Michael O'Keeffe, who made five saves for the shutout.
• Niagara rested many of its starters in a 1-0 loss at Iona in the MAAC regular-season finale for both teams. Vassil Rossopoulos scored the game's only goal in the 77th minute for the Gaels (14-2-2, 8-1-0). The Purple Eagles (7-9-2, 5-3-1) hold the third seed for next weekend's MAAC Tournament, and will play No. 2 Loyola in the semifinals Friday.
• Dayton's Jeff Popella scored on a penalty kick at the 88:53 mark, then scored the winner in overtime as the visiting Flyers beat St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in the Atlantic 10 finale for both teams. Sam Maheu opened the scoring for the Bonnies (9-8, 5-3), who open the A-10 Tournament on Thursday as the No. 6 seed against No. 3 Fordham at 5 p.m.
Women's volleyball
Canisius and Niagara both dropped road contests in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins (11-17, 8-9) fell in four games, 25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 30-28, to Marist, while NU (20-8, 13-4) lost for just the second time in its last 13 matches with a five-game defeat at Siena. The scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 15-8.
Freshman Samantha Good led Canisius with 18 kills, while Hannah Hedrick led NU with 14. Niagara and Canisius close the regular season against each other Saturday at NU's Gallagher Center.
Men's Basketball
Host Erie Community College won its own Cole's/Brennans Tournament on Sunday with a 76-68 victory over Cuyahoga (Ohio) Community College. Tournament MVP Jeffrey Arzu had 18 points and six rebounds for the Kats (4-0).
Also for ECC, God's Gift Achiuwa (15 points, 15 rebounds) and Tola Lawal (17 points, eight rebounds) were all-tournament selections.
